URC: DHL Stormers Welcome Back International Heavyweights for Vital Hollywoodbets Sharks Clash

05 October 2026

DHL Stormers defence coach Norman Laker has confirmed a massive personnel injection ahead of Saturday’s United Rugby Championship coastal derby against the Sharks at Cape Town Stadium at 16:00 SAST.

Following a tight away loss to Edinburgh, the Cape franchise welcomes back a powerful contingent of returning Springboks to fortify the matchday squad. The high-stakes local derby promises extreme physicality with both teams restoring their international heavyweights to active duty.

Laker expects a fiercely contested encounter, noting that the return of key national players elevates the stakes of local derbies. He anticipates a relentless battle at the breakdown and collision points as players compete for national honours.

“It’s a South African derby, and it’s always physical,” he told the media on Monday. “It’s almost like Springbok trials; every single guy wants to prove that he can be a Bok, so I’m looking forward to a massive game this weekend.”

The Stormers defensive systems will gain significant experience and structural reinforcement with multiple veteran loose forwards and backline anchors clearing medical protocols. While the team remains thin in specific wide channels, the forward pack receives a timely boost in scrummaging depth.

“We’re playing on grass, and all the Springboks are back,” said Laker. “Deon (Fourie) will be back, Damian (Willemse), Sacha (Feinberg-Mngomezulu), Cobus (Reinach), Wilco Louw and Zach Porthen. All of the guys are available except for Cheslin (Kolbe), who is obviously injured.”

The coaching staff continues to monitor the fitness of several primary pack options before locking down the final starting fifteen later this week. Front-row resources and back-row balances depend heavily on late-week medical clearances.

“André-Hugo must still be cleared according to World Rugby’s [concussion] protocols, but we’re hopeful he will be,” Laker said. Evan Roos finds himself in a similar race against time. He is undergoing rigorous fitness testing this week to prove his readiness to anchor the scrum against a bruising Sharks loose trio.
