Bulls: Captain Marcell Coetzee Faces Lengthy Suspension After Citing

28 October 2026

Vodacom Bulls loose forward Marcell Coetzee faces a disciplinary hearing today following a citing for dangerous play against Ulster Rugby last Saturday.

The match Citing Commissioner lodged a formal complaint against the Bulls number six for an act of foul play during the encounter on 24 October. The incident involved an illegal clearing action against Ulster lock Ben Donnell.

Coetzee stands accused of violating Law 9.20(a) and Law 9.20(b), which govern dangerous play at the ruck or maul. The citation notes that the player allegedly charged into the breakdown without binding and made contact above the shoulder line.

"A Player must not charge into a ruck or maul," the World Rugby regulations state regarding Law 9.20(a). "Charging includes any contact made without binding onto another player in the ruck or maul."

Under Law 9.20(b), the regulations strictly forbid illegal head contact during counter-rucking sequences. The rule dictates that "a Player must not make contact with an opponent above the line of the shoulders."

If found guilty, the flanker faces standard World Rugby disciplinary sanctions for foul play at the breakdown. Lower-end breaches carry a two-week entry point, while mid-range offences result in a four-week suspension.

Because the citation involves contact above the shoulder line, the panel must apply a minimum mid-range entry point if the foul play is proven. Top-end infringements can trigger severe bans ranging from eight weeks up to a maximum of one year.

A three-man judicial panel will hear the case via video conference to determine if the challenge warrants a suspension. Ireland’s Ben Rutherford chairs the disciplinary committee alongside Welsh panel members Declan Goodwin and Chris Morgan.
