URC: ‘Another Beast Waiting’: Pietersen Urges Calm After Hollywoodbets Sharks Slay Leinster

05 October 2026

Head coach JP Pietersen admitted he is still processing the magnitude of the Hollywoodbets Sharks’ thrilling 26–20 bonus-point victory over defending champions Leinster at Hollywoodbets Kings Park on Saturday. The bonus-point triumph propelled the Durban-based franchise to the summit of the United Rugby Championship (URC) standings after a blockbuster clash of titans.

The hosts secured maximum points against the European powerhouse, sparking wild celebrations in the Shark Tank. First-half tries from Manu Tshituka and Lili Bester set the platform before late scores from André Esterhuizen and an Edwill van der Merwe intercept sealed the result.

Pietersen confessed to being shell-shocked by his squad’s clinical execution against world-class opposition. "To win against the champions, against Leinster, it’s really special. To get five points, it’s really special," the ex-Bok told reporters post-match at Kings Park. "We’ll enjoy tonight. I don’t think you get it, but I’m still processing; you can see I’m stuttering. I’m still processing that we won two [matches] and 10 points. So, ja, it’s just unreal scenes today."

The victory was heavily bolstered by returning Springbok heavyweight stars fresh off international duty. Despite managing only a single training session on Thursday, the returning contingent integrated flawlessly to anchor a bruising set-piece performance.

Pietersen admitted to pre-game nerves regarding the limited preparation time with the full squad. "I was quite nervous [about the returning Boks] before the game," Pietersen said. "We had only one training session with them on Thursday, but it showed their eliteness and how good they are as players and professionals."

The coach praised the impact of his heavy hitters during critical turning points. "We needed an injection after Leinster scored, so Eben was outstanding with that transition try. André scored, I don’t even know what was happening, and then Edwill finished it off with the intercept try," Pietersen noted. "It just shows what they bring. And the rest of the group is all about doing the right thing, letting the system work, and letting the Springboks just do their thing when they need to."

On taking down Leinster, who remain winless in the 2026-27 season, Pietersen maintained a grounded perspective ahead of next Saturday’s derby against the Stormers. "I’m a realist – that’s not Leinster’s best of the best," Pietersen added. "But you can see they put us under pressure because they’ve got a good system, a good coach, a good organisation."

The Sharks will look to maintain this bruising momentum as they prepare for a hostile coastal trip. "For us as a group, we must just keep pressing, take this win and regroup on Monday, because we’ve got another beast waiting for us in Cape Town on Saturday," the coach concluded.
