The 2026 Carling Currie Cup Premier Division kicks off with an explosive opening-round clash as the Airlink Pumas host the Hollywoodbets Sharks XV at Mbombela Stadium this Friday, July 17. Kick-off is scheduled for 17:00 SAST.
The Pumas enter the campaign with massive momentum under the guidance of the vastly experienced Jimmy Stonehouse. The Nelspruit-based outfit recently completed a dominant defence of their SA Cup title, losing just once in 11 matches, and they will look to carry that championship-winning form directly into the premier domestic competition.
In contrast, the Sharks XV arrive in the Lowveld under the guidance of new head coach Mike Vowles. A long-serving assistant and age-group mentor, Vowles steps into the top job after leading the Sharks U21 side to a provincial title in 2025.
The Durbanites narrowly edged the Pumas 19-13 in a tense, three-tries-to-one final league round last season to scrape through to the play-offs. Vowles will be desperate for a similar result to ignite their 2026 campaign, but they face a daunting task away from home.
To handle the hostile Nelspruit atmosphere, the Sharks will lean heavily on the experience of veteran flyhalf Tim Swiel and former Pumas scrumhalf Ross Braude to control the game's tempo. Eighthman Thomas Dyer captains the youthful side, bolstered by the return of lock Johan Momsen, after professional stints in the United States and New Zealand.
However, conquering Mbombela Stadium remains one of the toughest assignments in South African rugby. The Pumas are notoriously brutal on their own turf and will look to dismantle the younger Sharks unit using their trademark heavy forward pack and devastating rolling mauls.
