
The SA Schools ‘A’ side produced a stunning second-half fightback to secure a thrilling 34-33 victory over SA Schools at Grey High School. Trailing 21-07 at the halftime break, the 'A' team shocked everyone by dominating the final stages to claim a famous, one-point win.
The SA Schools team started like a house on fire. Just three minutes into the match, Ethan van Biljon scored in the corner following a brilliant run by Jacobus de Villiers and soft hands from Lamla Mgedezi. Travis Pheiffer added the conversion to give SA Schools an early 07-00 lead.
Six minutes later, Theo Boshoff picked up the ball at the base of a ruck and stormed 25 meters downfield to score SA Schools' second try. Pheiffer successfully kicked the extra two points to double the lead.
What followed was an extremely physical clash, with SA Schools asserting dominance through crisp handling and brutal tackles. Despite the heavy pressure, the SA Schools 'A' defence held firm with immense resilience. However, after 22 minutes of play, hard work from Boshoff put Mickyle Booyse through a gap to score SA Schools' third try. Pheiffer converted once again, extending the cushion to a commanding 21-00.
SA Schools 'A' finally clawed their way into contention during the final 10 minutes of the half. Showing brilliant stepping and pace, Ruan Roux broke through for a superb try, cutting the deficit to 21-07 at the halftime break.
Despite a strong restart by the 'A' side, it was SA Schools who struck first in the second stanza. Stefan van de Vyfer crashed over, and a conversion by Achmat Behardien stretched the lead to 28-07.
SA Schools 'A' hit back nine minutes into the half. Aphelele Chamane crashed over directly from a lineout, reducing the gap to 28-12. Just three minutes later, the 'A' team spread the ball wide off a dominant scrum to Lucritia Magua, who strolled over for their third try to pull the score to within nine points.
With momentum firmly on their side, Jaydon Viljoen slotted a crucial penalty, making it a one-score game at 28-22 with 15 minutes left on the clock.
SA Schools threatened to take the game away when Luxolo Sonkonokono brilliantly controlled a grubber kick from Behardien to score in the corner, pushing their lead out to 33-22.
The drama escalated with four minutes remaining when Nathan Aneke anticipated a pass perfectly, snatching a well-weighted interception to race away for a try. Viljoen converted, bringing the 'A' side to within four points at 33-29.
SA Schools 'A' continued to pile on the pressure. Following a string of brilliant passes across the backline, Rhandzu Mkhabela scored a sensational try in the corner. For the first time in the match, SA Schools 'A' led 34-33 with less than two minutes to play.
With time up on the clock, SA Schools launched one final, desperate attack with everything they had, but the 'A' team's defence held like a rock. SA Schools 'A' successfully closed out the game to secure a shocking and unforgettable 34-33 victory.
