The Hollywoodbets Sharks have received a massive injection as five frontline Springboks linked up with the touring squad in Wales ahead of Friday night’s Vodacom URC showdown against Cardiff at 20:45 SAST.
The returning heavyweights missed last weekend’s gritty 40-33 EPCR Challenge Cup victory over Lyon to serve a mandatory rest period, though forwards coach Warren Whiteley noted that "they've joined us this week, and we've only had one session, so it is about getting everyone aligned with the plan."
Powerhouse props Ox Nché and Thomas du Toit, midfield general André Esterhuizen, hard-running back Ethan Hooker, and explosive winger Edwill van der Merwe joined the touring camp.
The Sharks have quickly shifted focus after their dramatic victory over Lyon to prepare for a bruising battle against a well-drilled Cardiff Rugby unit at Cardiff Arms Park. Whiteley warned that *"it won’t be easy because Cardiff, who finished sixth last season, have developed into a difficult team to play against, particularly on their home ground, where they only lost once last season."
To secure a victory on the synthetic turf, the Durban side must overcome an intimate tactical familiarity with former Cheetahs lock Corniel van Zyl, who serves as the Cardiff Head Coach.
A massive tactical duel awaits the visitors at the set-piece and through the aerial kicking battle. Whiteley highlighted the danger of facing a familiar foe, stating that "he will know us intimately, and we know him quite well as coaches and as a group, so it’s a nice challenge for us."
The Durban forward pack faces a severe test against a highly analytical system, with Whiteley adding that "he’s an astute lineout coach, he’s very smart... so the set-piece will be huge, and they’re also tactically a very smart team."
