Stormers: Dawie Snyman Clears Ruhan Nel of Recurring Calf Concerns

The Stormers management has adopted a conservative approach regarding the fitness of captain Ruhan Nel. The experienced centre was a late withdrawal from the team's commanding 49-12 Champions Cup opening victory against the Bristol Bears.

Nel was pulled from the matchday squad after experiencing discomfort. Attack coach Dawie Snyman later confirmed the late reshuffle was purely a precautionary measure to safeguard their skipper against a long-term layoff.

“It’s probably more precautionary. He could have pushed [to play on Saturday],” Snyman stated during a media briefing. “On a calf, if you rip it, then it’s a little bit longer term. So we didn’t want to take a chance there.”

The injury scare triggered immediate concern given Nel's recent medical history. The 35-year-old previously struggled with a similar calf niggle that sidelined him for three crucial local derbies against the Lions and the Sharks last season, fixtures the Cape franchise ultimately lost. He also picked up a calf strain playing against the All Blacks on 7 August.

However, the coaching staff dispelled fears of a recurring chronic breakdown. Snyman confirmed that this specific minor strain has occurred on the opposite leg to the previous injury site.

“It’s a small calf injury; him not playing was more precautionary,” Snyman explained. “When it comes to calf injuries, if you rip it, it takes a bit longer to heal, so we didn’t want to risk it.”

Head coach John Dobson remains optimistic that the disruption will be short-lived. While Dobson voiced hope post-match that his captain would only be sidelined for approximately a week, the medical team refuses to rush the process.
