10bet Lions defence coach Jaque Fourie has warned his squad to brace for a gruelling, 80-minute battle ahead of their United Rugby Championship (URC) clash against Ospreys at Emirates Airline Park this Saturday at 13:45 SAST.
The Johannesburg-based franchise enters Round 2 hunting for consistency after edging out Leinster in their tournament opener last weekend. Meanwhile, the Welsh regional side lands on the highveld desperate to bounce back from a heavy 41-24 defeat against the Sharks in Durban.
Fourie underscored the heavy set-piece challenge awaiting his forward pack after mapping the visitors' recent platform metrics. The tactical focus at Doornfontein this week centred entirely on defusing the Welsh team's primary source of momentum. [1]
“Even with them coming to Johannesburg, Ospreys are always a tough side. No matter where we play them, it is always a tight match. They have a big pack of forwards, and they maul a lot and scrum well,” said Fourie. “We saw in their game against the Sharks they scrummed really well, so they have brought that aspect to their game.”
The hosts receive a massive squad injection with Springbok duo Morne van den Berg and Quan Horn returning to full selection availability. Their explosive threat from the backline provides crucial tactical options as the coaching staff balances a heavily congested early-season calendar. [1]
“Our Boks are available. The nice thing about Morne and Quan is that they are Lions men; they always want to play, and they want the union to do well. So they are back in the squad, and we just have to decide where we want to use them,” explained Fourie.
Flawless discipline and territorial dominance remain the clear focus areas if the Pride intends to crack the resilient Ospreys defensive systems. Fourie stressed that any drop-off in concentration will be swiftly punished by the clinical travelling outfit.
“They also never go away. They play for 80 minutes, so we need to be clinical, we need to play in the right areas of the field, and we need to put them under pressure with and without ball in hand.”
