The DHL Stormers have officially boosted their backline depth with the signing of viral winger Lleyton Davids on a full professional contract. The 25-year-old speedster earned his move to the United Rugby Championship (URC) franchise following an extraordinary club rugby season and a standout pre-season cameo.
F7 Sports Management confirmed the deal this week, marking a massive leap for the amateur standout into top-tier professional rugby.
The Bonnievale-born flyer forced his way into the selection frame after a prolific spell for Robertson Town in the Boland club rugby competition. Davids tore defences apart to dot down a staggering 31 tries in just 19 appearances this season. He then translated that club form onto the big stage, turning heads during a sharp 40-minute stint against the Vodacom Bulls in a recent warm-up match.
"We are delighted to announce that Lleyton Davids has signed a professional contract with the DHL Stormers," his agency, F7 Sports Management, stated in the official announcement. "The speedster now has the opportunity to make his mark on the professional rugby stage. We are incredibly proud."
Davids brings serious gas to the Cape side's wider channels as a three-time South African senior triple jump champion with a 10.30-second 100m sprint time. While his raw athletic attributes are undeniable, the Stormers coaching staff view the lethal finisher as a long-term development project.
Stormers Director of Rugby John Dobson labelled Davids a "freak in every way" and noted the team took a punt on him after viewing grainy footage. Dobson said that Davids will need at least a year of development to adapt to the tactical and aerial demands of top-tier rugby before featuring in the URC.
