URC: Jones Demands Higher Gear as Ospreys Prepare for Highveld Battle

01 October 2026

Ospreys head coach Mark Jones has demanded an immediate shift in intensity as his squad prepares to battle the 10bet Lions at altitude this Saturday at 13:45 SAST.

The Welsh regional side opened their United Rugby Championship campaign with a 24-41 defeat against the Hollywoodbets Sharks in Durban. Despite salvaging a crucial losing bonus point from the gruelling encounter, Jones insisted his team must sharpen their execution to survive the high-altitude onslaught in Johannesburg.

Early defensive lapses and slow reactions out of the blocks ultimately cost the visitors a victory. Jones pointed directly to sluggishness and unforced errors during the opening half as the decisive factors that swung momentum to the hosts.

"We've come away from a traditionally tough place to come with a point," Jones remarked, evaluating the mixed opening performance. "We were just too slow at the start. Sharks were far more excited than we were around capitalising on mistakes, and a couple of soft individual collisions cost us in the first half."

The Ospreys coaching staff remains confident it can tighten up these early-season loose ends before kickoff at Ellis Park. The emphasis during training this week has focused on cleaning up first-time tackles and matching the explosive physicality expected from the Lions pack.

"They are all fixable things that we are in control of," Jones added. "There was an awful lot of good to come out of the game, but we need to go up a couple of gears for the Lions."

The upcoming fixture presents a formidable challenge, with the Lions renowned for their expansive, running rugby on the hard highveld surface. Ospreys will need to assert early set-piece dominance and maintain a relentless defensive line to neutralise the home side's attacking threats.
