URC: Payne Outlines Plan to Counter Big, Physical Bulls at Thomond Park

01 October 2026

Munster assistant coach Jared Payne expects a massive physical onslaught when they host the Vodacom Bulls at Thomond Park on Saturday at 20:45 SAST. The Irish province is looking to bounce back immediately following their narrow 26-20 opening-round defeat against Glasgow Warriors.

Payne said that the Bulls will bring their trademark brutal power and high-intensity defensive line speed to Limerick. Munster's coaching staff has spent the week refining tactical strike plays to defuse the visitors' suffocating set-piece and breakdown pressure.

“Any team that the Bulls put out, they’re going to be big and physical; they pride themselves on that,” Payne said. “They have good set-piece play, they’re going to get off the line on defence and try and pressure you.”

To counter the South African outfit, Munster intends to deploy a high-tempo attacking strategy designed to stretch the Bulls' heavy defensive line. The game plan relies heavily on sharp distribution and exploiting transitional spaces before the visitors can set their defensive block.

“We’re expecting all of this; we have to be smart with how we counter it,” Payne explained. “We have to try and force them to make a few decisions and hopefully create a bit of space and make the most of those opportunities.”

With consecutive home fixtures on the line, the squad is under no illusions about the clinical execution required to secure a vital victory. Securing the breakdown and winning the gainline battles remain the hosts' absolute priorities ahead of Saturday's kick-off.

“You always want to win. You always want to win your home games, and you want to win games of rugby,” Payne concluded. “We just have to make sure that we front up and try and win, which you try and do every game.”
