URC Preview: Hollywoodbets Sharks Look to Extend Ospreys’ South African Hoodoo in Durban Opener

The Hollywoodbets Sharks kick off their 2026/27 Vodacom United Rugby Championship (URC) campaign on Saturday, 26 September 2026 at 16:00 SAST, when they host the Ospreys at Hollywoodbets Kings Park in Durban.

This historic season opener marks the first time in the tournament’s history that the KwaZulu-Natalians will start their regular season on home soil. Both franchises missed out on the top-eight playoff spots last season and will be desperate to lay down an immediate marker to spark a much stronger campaign.

The underlying trends heavily favour JP Pietersen’s men this weekend. While the Sharks finished an unpredictable 2025/26 campaign in 10th place, they turned the "Shark Tank" into an absolute fortress at the tail end of the year, losing just once in their last eight home URC matches. That run included a dominant 29-10 victory over the Ospreys in Durban back in May 2025.

In stark contrast, the Ospreys, who finished as the top Welsh region to claim the Welsh Shield last season, have historically struggled with the arduous trek to the southern hemisphere. The visitors arrive in Durban having lost their last five consecutive matches in South Africa. Furthermore, the home team has emerged victorious in each of the last four meetings between these two sides, making the coastal conditions and local crowd a formidable "24th player" for the Sharks.

Due to mandatory rest periods for frontline Springboks, the Sharks will flex their squad depth for this opening fixture. Promising young back-rower Nick Hatton captains a highly dynamic matchday 23 that features five potential debutants. Pietersen is backing youthful exuberance and local continuity to maintain their formidable home record.

The Ospreys have naming rights to a side stacked with fresh energy of their own. Co-captained by hooker Sam Parry and centre Owen Watkin, the Welsh outfit includes four prominent competitive debutants: Australian fly-half Lawson Creighton, midfielder Lalakai Foketi, back-rower Liam Wright, and Welsh international winger Tom Rogers.

Without their heavyweight international stars, the Sharks will rely on quick ball movement and high-intensity coastal rugby to tire out the visitors in the Durban heat. Ospreys, guided by the tactical boot of new playmaker Creighton, will likely aim to slow down the breakdown, play for territory, and rely on a heavy defensive shift to frustrate the young Sharks side—replicating the tight 21-17 squeeze they managed against the Durbanites in Swansea last April.

While the Ospreys possess plenty of international experience in Watkin and Parry, breaking a five-match losing streak on South African soil against a notoriously strong home side is a massive ask for Week 1. Expect a highly physical, tightly contested first half before the Sharks' home-ground advantage and bench energy secure a narrow opening-weekend victory. Sharks by 6.
