Suzuki Griquas secured a historic home semi-final by topping the Carling Currie Cup Premier Division log for the first time since 1998, courtesy of a commanding 48-17 victory over an error-ridden Boland Cavaliers in Wellington. The visitors ran in seven tries to three, scoring 29 unanswered points in a dominant second-half display to seal the top spot.
This historic bonus-point result sets up an exciting semi-final clash where the Griquas will host the Fidelity ADT Lions. In the other knockout fixture, the Toyota Cheetahs will play host to the Airlink Pumas.
Boland opened the scoring early in the 3rd minute via an Ashlon Davids penalty. The Griquas hit back five minutes later when Marco de Witt crashed over following a dominant lineout maul. Tiaan Lange peeled off the back of the set-piece to deliver the crucial offload to De Witt, with Liam Koen adding the conversion.
Discipline quickly became an issue for the hosts. Griquas used a string of penalties to gain territory, allowing Dylan Maart to cross the whitewash in the 11th minute off a perfectly weighted cross-kick from Koen. Boland's woes deepened immediately after when Joshua Eras was shown a yellow card, temporarily reducing the home side to 14 men.
The visitors suffered their own disciplinary scare at the 20-minute mark when Leon Lyons was sin-binned. A bunker referral upheld the yellow card rather than upgrading it to a red. Boland capitalised on the even numbers, wrestling back momentum as Sibusiso Sangweni bulldozed over the line, with Davids converting to trim the gap to 12-10.
The Cavaliers went on to dominate the final 15 minutes of the first half, launching wave after wave of attacks. This relentless pressure paid off when Jayden Bantom sliced through the Griquas' defence to score, giving Boland a temporary 17-12 lead.
Right on the stroke of halftime, Lange reclaimed the advantage for Griquas by scoring from another powerful lineout maul. Koen’s conversion sent the teams into the tunnel with Griquas leading 19-17, despite Boland conceding nine penalties to three in the opening stanza.
The second half belonged entirely to the men from Kimberley as they capitalised on Boland's mounting errors. Five minutes after the restart, Carl Els scored off the back of a dominant scrum to secure the crucial four-try bonus point. Koen converted to stretch the lead to 26-17.
In the 49th minute, the Griquas again used a massive scrum platform to shift the ball wide to Maart. He offloaded cleanly to Stefan Coetzee for a well-worked try, followed by another successful conversion from Koen.
Boland's discipline disintegrated entirely in the final half-hour, starting with a yellow card for Jurick Lewis in the 56th minute. Griquas punished them instantly from the ensuing play as Lourens Oosthuizen broke away from a 5-metre lineout to score, pushing the scoreline to 40-17.
The match ended in further disciplinary trouble for the hosts when Lunathi Nxele received a yellow card that was subsequently upgraded to a 20-minute red. Gurshwin Wehr immediately exploited the extra space to add his name to the scoresheet.
Veteran flyhalf George Whitehead then put the final exclamation mark on the performance with an 80th-minute penalty, wrapping up a comprehensive 48-17 win for the Griquas.
