Toyota Cheetahs Overcome Card Crisis to Tame Spirited Sanlam Boland Cavaliers

A staggering five yellow cards turned a tense Currie Cup battle into absolute second-half chaos, as the Free State Cheetahs ruthlessly exploited a three-man numerical advantage to overpower the Boland Cavaliers 33-24.

What began as a gruelling, error-strewn first-half arm-wrestle completely exploded after the break. The Cavaliers held a slender 10-07 lead at halftime, but their discipline utterly dissolved under heavy pressure.

Within a frantic six-minute window, the visitors were reduced to just 11 men after receiving three consecutive yellow cards. The Cheetahs capitalised immediately, unleashing a lethal four-try blitz, headlined by a lightning-fast brace from Michael Annies, to snatch a commanding lead and ultimate victory.

The opening 40 minutes proved to be a gruelling, error-strewn battle as both sides struggled with handling errors. The Cheetahs broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute when forward Juan Smal rumbled over the line following a powerful rolling maul. Tiaan Swanepoel added the extras from the sideline.

Boland hit back just before the half-hour mark. Catching the hosts off guard with a quick tap penalty, Johnré Stopforth drove through the defence to score. Ashlon Davids converted to level the score. A late penalty on the stroke of halftime allowed Davids to slot a crucial kick, giving the Cavaliers a slim 10-7 lead at the break.

The Cheetahs emerged with renewed intent in the second half. Just three minutes after the restart, veteran scrumhalf Faf de Klerk pulled the strings to find Zander du Plessis, who crashed over to restore the hosts' lead. Swanepoel added the conversion and quickly followed it up with a penalty to stretch the lead to 17-10.

Then, discipline completely unravelled for the Cavaliers. Within a frantic six-minute window, Boland was reduced to 11 men after receiving three consecutive yellow cards. Kwanda Dimaza was binned for a head-on-head collision with De Klerk, followed quickly by Cornel Smit for a mauling infringement, and Johnré Stopforth for a cynical foul.

The Cheetahs ruthlessly exploited the numerical advantage. De Klerk sniped around the fringes to score in the 62nd minute, before winger Michael Annies ran in a brilliant brace, first diving over in the corner and then carving through the defence underneath the sticks just minutes later. Swanepoel and Swanepoel's boot pushed the lead out to 33-17.

Boland’s Gift Dlamini and Cheetahs' Prince Nkabinde both saw yellow late in the game as the referee continued to clamp down on infringements. Despite being well beaten, the Cavaliers showed immense fight in the final ten minutes. Joshua Eras barged over from a pick-and-go, and Bentley Geldenhuys finished off a spectacular coast-to-coast effort after a botched Cheetahs lineout.

Ultimately, the late surge was not enough to overturn the Cheetahs' dominant scoring spell, leaving the final score at 33-24.
