DHL Stormers forwards coach Rito Hlungwani has praised loosehead prop Ntuthuko Mchunu as a future superstar of South African rugby, highlighting his potential to become a long-term Springbok.
Hlungwani spoke about his “excitement” when the news of his move to the Stormers, from the Sharks, was confirmed in March 2025.
“It is nice to see his growth. I challenge him a lot, and he embraces it. There is plenty more coming, and I am happy with where we are.”
Mchunu credited his recent call-up to the Springbok squad for accelerating his development.
“Once you get a taste of that environment and the standards they hold, you don’t want to be away. Those two weeks were massive for me, just learning how they do things. I can bring that back to the Stormers and keep growing.”
Mchunu credited his recent try-scoring prowess to his wish to contribute to the team, rather than being an individual star.
“I’ve been fortunate that I scored in recent games, but it is more important that the plans we put in place during the week is reflected in our performance on the weekend.”
“One of my strengths is certainly my ball-carrying. The more I improve that and [something that] gives me an edge over other players, I will continue doing it. It is good to look at those guys, but it is more about writing my own story.”
Muchunu said his focus is on helping the Stormers win some silverware, rather than getting his hopes up for a call from Rassie Erasmus.
“Should I play well enough and the people there [Bok coaches] feel I belong, I will get a shot. However, my main focus is on the Stormers.”
