Schoolboy rugby in KwaZulu-Natal kicks off this weekend with several top interschools being played. However, even before the season starts in al earnest, the question of U19S representing their schools' 1stXV is discussed in all bars across the province and elsewhere.
I spoke to a very successful KZN 1stXV coach regarding this issue, and his reply was blunt and without excuse. And I quote “It’s not u18 it’s u19 is it not ? Or have SA rugby changed something? I hear Boishaai is buying the North, or I guess everyone seems to be rehousing 😂😂😂😂😂😂. The SA law says it is an u19 league yes or no ! That’s fine. But the league is u 19 in Cpt and KZN so what’s the problem ? There is nothing wrong but the fact is SA rugby says it is u 19 so let there be noise in the North , if it changes to u 18 then we will play u 18’s.”
The pros and cons of using U19 were already discussed in length, and personally, both sides' arguments have merit; however, if it is not against any rules and regulations of the various Unions and the schools follow Boksmart rules and regulations, all is fair in love and war.
The King of KwaZulu-Natal will most probably be decided between the Young Guns teams of DHS (4) and Westville (8), according to reliable sources, at the end of May.
DHS had a brilliant start to the season, beating Ligbron 79-10 a week ago with brilliant, unforgiving rugby. Michaelhouse, which starts its season against the best team in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday, DHS ranked higher than Westville on the ranking due to the better quality opposition they face in 2026.
Hilton will face Westville as the underdogs despite beating Middelburg 49-10 a week ago, while Westville will be playing their first of the season. It is expected that Westville will make it three in a row, and the bookies expect it to be fairly close again.
The ever-improving Maritzburg will face Tjaart Marais’ Helpmekaar, who gave Witteberg a 77-05 hiding a week ago. Helpmekaar is said to be Top 10 material and should return to the City of Gold with tired but big smiles Saturday evening.
Elsewhere, the eyes will be on Glenwood, which has promised its return to greatness for two years or more. They face Nortwood, who is the favourite to edge Glenwood. again.
Fixture for the Week ending 15 March 2026
DHS vs Michaelhouse
Hilton vs Westville
Maritzburg College vs Helpmekaar
Northwood vs Glenwood
St Charles vs Kearsney
