Victor Matfield predicted a low-scoring, grinding match, backing the Bulls to win by a narrow one-point margin if they successfully enforce their physical dominance in the United Rugby Championship grand final against Leinster on Friday, 19 June 2026 at 20:30 (SA Time).
Matfield warned against running elaborate wide plays or taking "off-the-top" lineout balls in transitional zones, citing how similar tactics led to costly turnovers in the semi-final. He said that trying to beat Leinster at a high-tempo, expansive game is a losing strategy.
“It is a difficult one because Leinster must be favourites at home, but I think the Bulls are going to graft away for the full 80-minutes, and they must be at their utmost best as they administer their slow poison.
The former Springbok captain said that the Bulls' scrum is their ultimate strength and the primary weapon to win critical penalties and the match.
“If you only had to pick one weapon for the Bulls, it would be the scrum.”
“They’ve got the same front row that destroyed Ireland on last year’s November tour. It will be interesting to see if they start with Wilco Louw (Francois Klopper started against the Warriors) or bring him off the bench along with Jan-Hendrik Wessels for double impact.
“Their scrum is their danger weapon, and they would love to win penalties and maybe even yellow cards from their scrum.”
He advises turning to the maul more frequently right in the middle of the park to disrupt Leinster's defensive rhythm. The Bulls must graft for the full 80 minutes, using relentless, ultra-physical defensive pressure to wear down the hosts.
Pointing out Leinster's lethal efficiency, Matfield notes that if you give them opportunities inside your own 22, their execution and conversion rates are practically flawless.
“When Leinster get into your 22, their execution is unbelievable,” Matfield said. “Their conversion rate is excellent. If you give them too many opportunities there, you’re in trouble.”
“If Leinster start building a lead, you’re in big trouble. That’s why the start and the physical battle up front are going to be so important.”
Matfield praised incoming coach Johan Ackermann for breaking the team's historical away hoodoo by consistently travelling with their strongest lineups, creating a robust 8-game winning streak.
“One of the things I like about Johan Ackermann is that he saw that in the past few years, when the Bulls went overseas, they took weakened teams to play difficult games, and targeted their home games.”
“Johan came in, and they travelled every time with their best team, and they created belief. They have a fantastic record overseas in this URC, and they have momentum with eight consecutive wins.”
