Toyota Cheetahs Hold Off Furious Vodacom Bulls Comeback in 113-Point Currie Cup Thriller

The high-flying Toyota Cheetahs kept the Vodacom Bulls winless in an extraordinary, high-scoring Currie Cup encounter, securing a breathtaking 61-52 victory in Bloemfontein. In a match that produced a combined 113 points, a dominant first-half display by the home side was ultimately enough to withstand a furious late comeback from the Pretoria outfit.

The Cheetahs put on a clinical attacking masterclass in the opening 50 minutes, exploiting massive gaps in a passive Bulls defensive line to cross the whitewash almost at will. Flyhalf Jaco van der Walt was in sublime form with the boot, converting eight of his team's nine tries and landing a clutch, game-sealing penalty at the death.

The Cheetahs wasted no time asserting their dominance, pouncing on an early dropped ball by the Bulls just three minutes into the game. Winger Michael Annies kicked a clever grubber through, controlled it cleanly, and dotted down for the opening try, which Van der Walt comfortably converted.

The Bulls struck back swiftly in the seventh minute when they spread the ball wide from a dominant ruck, allowing JJ Mothlodi to crash over in the corner. However, the hosts quickly reassumed control. Following wave after wave of relentless attacking phases, Zander du Plessis powered over for the Cheetahs' second try.

Just two minutes later, Prince Nkabinde showcased his raw pace, outstripping the cover defence out wide to extend the lead to 21-5. The Bulls briefly stemmed the tide using their forward pack, piling 12 players into a powerful lineout maul that allowed Siphosethu Mnebelele to rumble over, with Keagan Johannes adding the extras.

Yet, the Cheetahs responded ruthlessly. Du Plessis turned provider in the 23rd minute, breaking through several tackles before delivering a neat offload to Annies, who secured the Cheetahs' try bonus point.

Although Kebotile Maake peeled off the back of a driving maul to score the Bulls' third try, the final ten minutes of the half belonged entirely to the home side. Spotting an overlap on the blindside, Nkabinde crashed over for his second of the afternoon.

Neels Volschenk then capitalised on poor tackling to burst through the defensive line. On the stroke of half-time, fullback Cohen Jasper sliced through the defence to score right under the sticks, sending the Cheetahs into the break with a commanding 47-17 lead.

The second half began in much the same fashion, as the Cheetahs picked up right where they left off. Just seven minutes after the restart, Jasper reacted quickest to a bouncing ball in the Bulls' in-goal area to score his second.

Shortly after, skipper Victor Sekekete joined the scoring blitz. He executed a well-worked move off the front of a lineout to cross the line and extend the lead to a massive 59-17.

Staring down an embarrassing blowout, the Bulls began a sensational resurgence in the 55th minute. Marnus Rademeyer cut a beautiful line through the Cheetahs' midfield to lock down a crucial scoring bonus point.

Less than ten minutes later, the Bulls' backs launched a stunning long-distance counter-attack. The brilliant team move was finished off and converted by scrumhalf Keagan Johannes, bringing the score to 59-31.

The momentum shifted entirely in the 67th minute when Cheetahs hooker Marko Janse van Rensburg was shown a yellow card, reducing the hosts to 14 men. The Bulls immediately exploited the numerical advantage, with Nizaam Carr crashing over off the back of a rolling maul.

Catching the Cheetahs sleeping just three minutes later, the visitors took a quick tap from a penalty, allowing Devon Williams to slice through. Johannes added the conversion to keep the pressure mounting.

A grandstand finish was officially set up in the 78th minute when Rademeyer chased down a deep kick upfield to grab his brace. Johannes landed a clutch conversion from out wide to pull the Bulls within seven points at 59-52.

With tension at a boiling point, the Cheetahs managed to win a crucial penalty inside the Bulls' half as the clock ticked down. Van der Walt stepped up and calmly slotted the long-range penalty, putting the game out of reach and sealing an unforgettable 61-52 victory.
