The past week of schoolboy 1st XV action delivered high-octane drama, shocking upsets, and massive statement victories across South Africa. From the packed stands of Paarl to the fierce battlegrounds of the Noordvaal, the country’s premier teams left everything on the field. Here is how an unforgettable weekend of rugby unfolded.
The ultimate bragging rights of the weekend went to Paarl Gimnasium, who solidified their status at the peak of the national rankings by defeating arch-rivals Paarl Boys' High 25-11 at a packed Faure Street Stadium. Before an electric 25,000-strong crowd, Gimmies avenged last year's heartbreak. Outside centre Derik Cloete ignited the comeback with a brilliant chip-and-chase try before securing a vital brace to seal the win.
In the Southern Suburbs, Wynberg Boys' High made an emphatic statement by continuing their ruthless dominance. They completely dismantled traditional rivals Bishops in a staggering 64-12 blowout, leaving no doubt as to who rules the local neighbourhood.
Meanwhile, Stellenberg High School made the ultimate statement of intent. Completely shedding any lingering "wannabe" status, they systematically dismantled a gritty Hoërskool Durbanville side 42-12.
Cruising smoothly into the same lane, Paul Roos Gymnasium (PRG) had a comfortable warm-up fixture, defeating Boland Landbou 45-14 to send their own ominous warning across the landscape. The undefeated Stellenbosch giants looked entirely clinical, clicking through the gears with ease to set up a monumental, season-defining blockbuster against Grey College next weekend.
Up North, Affies delivered the most terrifying performance of the weekend in the Noordvaal, utterly demolishing Noordheuwel 66-24 in Pretoria. The Wit Bulle crossed the whitewash almost at will, leaving Noordheuwel with massive structural questions ahead of possible Noordvaal Cup playoffs. The breathtaking display left fans wondering what could have been had Affies found this form earlier in 2026, especially as they prepare to bid farewell to head coach Ruan Jacobs.
In the Noordvaal Cup division, Garsfontein shook off visible mid-season rust but still managed to completely dominate Middelburg 50-14 while Helpmekaar edged Waterkloof 39-34 in a breathless, high-scoring thriller. Monnas survived a massive scare to beat Rustenburg 38-31, though Rustenburg exposed serious leaks in the Monnas defence, and Menlopark controlled the pitch to secure a 36-05 win over EG Jansen, with the match brought to an early whistle following a brief late-game touchline scuffle.
In the Noordvaal Plate, Hoërskool Zwartkop kept their flawless regional campaign completely intact, ruthlessly dismantling HTS Middelburg 50-14 to extend their magnificent unbeaten streak.
In a classic Johannesburg derby, Jeppe stuttered to a 49-31 victory over a relentlessly stubborn KES outfit. Jeppe's expansive attacking game did enough to win, but KES refused to die, fighting back late in the match even when the proverbial fat lady's voice was cracking.
Down in KwaZulu-Natal, DHS fiercely defended their throne as the kings of regional rugby. The "Horseflies" fought back to defeat a dangerous Northwood side 26-19, avenging an earlier defeat. Meanwhile, Maritzburg College crossed the border to pile on the misery for Pretoria Boys High with a resounding 36-13 win in Pretoria.
Grey College sounded a massive warning siren across the country, ruthlessly dismantling their traditional brothers Grey High School 59-26 on the clinical fields of Bloemfontein. The "Battle of the Greys" saw the home side completely flip the script on their uncharacteristic four defeats earlier this year, putting on a breathtaking offensive clinic ahead of their Paul Roos mega-clash.
Graeme College cemented themselves as the 2026 powerhouse of the Eastern Cape, defeating Dale College 33-22 on Somerset Field. The victory extends their unbeaten streak to 10 matches, with their sole loss of the entire 2026 season remaining their April clash against Selborne. Speaking of Selborne, they were upended by a gritty Queen's College side who powered their way to a 55-15 victory.
Over in Gqeberha, Oakdale Landbou unleashed a furious back-on-track statement. Desperate to erase consecutive defeats to Paarl Gim and HTS Drostdy, the Riversdale agricultural side found their offensive rhythm to overpower Framesby 46-22.
