Physicality Meets Finesse: Inside The Meteoric Rise Of Vusi Moyo

Hollywoodbets Sharks playmaker Vusi Moyo is set to make a historic Springbok debut after being named at flyhalf to face Wales at Hollywoodbets Kings Park on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at 17:40 SAST.

Moyo’s ascension to senior international rugby has been nothing short of spectacular. After guiding the Junior Springboks to victory at the 2025 World Rugby U20 Championship, he made his senior franchise debut for the Hollywoodbets Sharks just two months ago in May 2026.

While the prodigy featured in a non-cap exhibition match against the Barbarians in June, Saturday’s clash in Durban marks his official entry into Test rugby.

Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus heavily praised the youngster's physical profile and technical composure, drawing loose comparisons to double Rugby World Cup-winning veteran Handré Pollard. Erasmus noted that Moyo is exceptionally big and physical for a 20-year-old, yet possesses the "soft hands" required for high-level tactical play and a formidable kicking game off the tee, out of hand, and during restarts.

Moyo is one of four uncapped players introduced by Erasmus to face Wales in the third and final home Test of the inaugural Nations Championship. Reflecting on his selection during a national team press conference alongside veteran halfback partner Cobus Reinach, the young playmaker admitted the news caught him by surprise.

“It's every kid's dream to be part of this Springbok set-up,” said a delighted Moyo. “When the call came through on Monday, my heart missed a beat. It's very special to be around Cobus and the other players. Personally, it’s about making my family and the people that have been with me along the way proud.”

Moyo highlighted that the step up to the elite national setup has provided an intense learning curve.

“It was very special to get my first cap for the Sharks and then a few weeks later, get called up to this squad, so it's something I’m excited about and very grateful for,” he added. “It offered me the opportunity to learn from the guys and keep improving because this set-up is much bigger, and you have to make decisions a lot quicker.”

While much of the media spotlight remains on the flyhalf jersey, Moyo emphasised that Saturday is a collective milestone for the new faces in the squad. He will share his debut moment with lock Ruben van Heerden, prop Carlu Sadie, and winger Jaco Williams, who are all looking to earn their first Test caps.

“Ruben, Carlu, and Jaco are all making their debuts too, so it's important for all of us to implement what the coaches have taught us going into this weekend,” Moyo said. “It's not just about me; it's about those guys as well. I’m very happy, and when you have two-time Rugby World Cup champions around you, it's easier to learn from them.”
