A devastating first-half hat-trick from flanker Stefan McDonald paved the way for a dominant Vodacom Bulls U20 side as they overpowered the Leopards U20 57-29 at Olën Park.
The Pretoria outfit ran in nine tries to secure maximum log points in a high-octane opening fixture of the SA Rugby Under-20 Cup.
The Vodacom Bulls U20 launched a blistering attack right from the kickoff, with loose forward Stefan McDonald crossing the whitewash after just six minutes. The Leopards hit back almost immediately via winger David Ndala and a Marno Greeff penalty, briefly seizing a 10-05 lead.
A chaotic, high-scoring first half saw both teams trade heavy blows. Leopards scrumhalf Marcwin Nero scored a fine try to pull the hosts level at 17-17, but the Bulls' relentless power upfront proved overwhelming. McDonald completed his stunning hat-trick from the back row in the 26th minute, before tighthead prop Bongani Dlamini and fullback Liyema Nela added quick-fire scores to give the visitors a commanding 38-17 lead at halftime.
The Bulls maintained their ruthless edge after the interval, with centre Leskin Samuels and scrumhalf Melt Viljoen crossing the line within nine minutes of the restart. Discipline threatened to derail the visitors when replacement Junade Pasensie received a yellow card in the 61st minute, allowing Leopards winger Willem Van Der Berg to strike back.
However, Samuels bagged his brace while down to 14 men to cross the 50-point threshold. A late consolation try by Leopards replacement Eagan Roux sealed the final score at 57-29 in a spectacular championship opener.
