The Blitzboks started like a house on fire and scored the first try of the match when Shilton van Wyk toed the ball ahead and collected it to score. Duarttee converted to extend the Blitzboks' lead to 07-00 after two minutes of play. Two minutes later, Ricardo Duarttee bulldozed his way over the tryline, extending the Blitzboks' lead to 14-00. With a minute still to play, Spain replied with two tries during the final minutes of the first half, to level the scores at 14-14 at the halftime break.
Spain led 26-14 after scoring two great tries against the 6-man Blitzboks following a yellow card to Zain Davids late in the second half. A second yellow card to Ricardo Duarttee reduced the Blitzboks to 5 players, which ended their hopes of a bronze medal in Bordeaux. Spain added two more tries to secure a 40-14 win.
