Wilco Louw got the nod at tighthead prop for the Springboks' highly anticipated Nations Championship Test against Scotland this Saturday, 11 July 2026, at Loftus Versfeld (17:40 SA Time).
The powerful front-rower expressed his thrill at running out in Pretoria once again, this time in the green and gold, following his high-profile move to the DHL Stormers at the end of the Vodacom URC season. Like his teammates, Louw is braced for a gruelling physical battle against the visiting Scots.
“Loftus is a special place, not only for the Vodacom Bulls guys but for the Boks as well,” Louw said. “It’s always amazing to play there. I'm looking forward to seeing the Bulls fans and even the groundsmen at the stadium.
"The stadium is a fortress for the Bulls and for South Africa. I have a soft spot for the franchise; they looked after me really well when I came here after school, and recently when I returned from England—especially when my family needed me during a crucial part of the season.”
While Highveld altitude is traditionally viewed as a lethal weapon for the Springboks, Louw believes international teams have evolved their preparation to neutralise the disadvantage.
“Altitude is altitude,” Louw noted. “You can prepare for it if you want to. I saw videos of the England team training on Wattbikes at altitude simulation, so teams can obviously adapt. If you want to slow the game down and create little opportunities to recover, you can. At the end of the day, it’s 1,300 metres above sea level, but international rugby is different now. Everyone is fit, and everyone can run.
“Look at the URC final between the Bulls and Glasgow; the visitors managed it really well. In the second half, they had fresh legs and competed right until the final whistle. It really comes down to how you manage those conditions.”
Despite being one of the more seasoned heads in a fresh-faced Bok forward pack, Louw dismissed the idea that experience shields a player from nerves.
“There's always pressure, regardless of how many Test caps you have,” said Louw. “I think it would be the same even if you ask a player like Eben (Etzebeth), who has over 140 caps. It’s about how you handle the pressure so that it doesn’t get the better of you, and staying locked into the task at hand.”
Familiarity breeds contempt, and with South African franchises regularly clashing with Scottish teams in the Vodacom URC, Louw expects an extra edge to Saturday's encounter.
“The URC is an incredible competition. Obviously, you get to know their guys well, but our focus remains entirely on ourselves and what we want to achieve on Saturday, whether it's in the scrums or any other facet of the game,” he said.
Louw will anchor a dynamic starting front row alongside loosehead Boan Venter and hooker Johan Grobbelaar. He expects a fierce set-piece battle orchestrated by Scotland's scrum coach, former Bok prop Pieter de Villiers.
“Pieter is a fantastic coach, and they have proper boys in the front row and at the back,” Louw warned. “They have a physical pack, which was evident from the direct, forward-driven tries they scored against Argentina. It's definitely going to be a tough one, but we have covered the bases we need to.”
The clash also sets up a mouth-watering individual battle against South African-born Scotland prop Pierre Schoeman.
“It’s always nice to scrum against Pierre. He’s a close friend and an incredible rugby player,” Louw joked about the dark arts of the front row. “There’s normally not a lot of talking going on in there; it’s a bit dark! It’s a massive moment and a big occasion during the game, but hopefully, we can have a good chat and a beer afterwards.”
