Rassie Erasmus has opted for a measured approach ahead of this weekend’s highly anticipated clash against the All Blacks, choosing a precautionary strategy with hero captain Siya Kolisi while unleashing "young turk" Paul de Villiers into the starting fold.
The decision balances long-term player welfare with the immediate tactical demands of a gruelling four-Test series against New Zealand. Rather than rushing Kolisi back into the high-intensity environment, the coaching staff have handed a massive opportunity to the rising loose forward De Villiers, who is set to face the traditional rivals in a major career milestone.
Erasmus confirmed that while Kolisi was physically available after participating in the week's training sessions, the management team chose to protect their talismanic leader.
“Siya trained well with us this week, and although we could have selected him for this clash, we thought it would be best to select Paul (de Villiers) for this weekend’s game,” Erasmus explained. “We are playing four Tests against the All Blacks and Paul has been playing well, so we are excited to give him a chance this weekend in what will be his first Test match against New Zealand, while taking a precautionary approach to Siya’s return.”
Players who remained behind in South Africa to prepare have been integrated with those who featured in the recent matches against Argentina. This has allowed individuals with a heavy recent workload to recover, while welcoming others back from injury layoffs.
“The squad is well balanced with players who remained in South Africa to train for this series and some of the players who featured against Argentina,” said Erasmus. “It certainly helped to have some players return from injury last week and to get back into top-flight Test rugby, while some of the others who had a heavy workload had sufficient time to recover from the physical toll on them.”
Erasmus emphasised that the squad is fully aligned after a week of intense preparation together, adding that selection will continue to be evaluated on a week-by-week basis.
While Kolisi’s absence will be felt, the weekend remains a historic occasion for the Springbok midfield, as bruising centre Damian de Allende is set to earn his 100th Test cap.
Erasmus paid tribute to the veteran's immense contribution to South African rugby, noting that achieving the milestone against the All Blacks makes it even more significant.
“We are all very excited for Damian, and to achieve this milestone in this series makes it even more special,” Erasmus said. “He’s a great team man, and servant to the game, so we hope we can make it a memorable day for him. That said, his focus all week has only been on this match, and he will certainly not let the occasion shadow what he has to do on the field.”
The Springboks are under no illusions about the scale of the challenge awaiting them. Matches between these two powerhouses are historically settled by the finest of margins, and Erasmus expects nothing less than a tactical and physical dogfight.
“They are a quality team, and they’re very well coached, so we are preparing for an 80-minute grind,” the coach warned. “They have a well-rounded squad with physical forwards and an exciting backline, so we have to be sharp and accurate in our execution from the outset."
With discipline and clinical finishing likely to decide the outcome, the Boks will need to capitalise on every opportunity to secure a victory on home soil.
