Can Oakdale Surprise The Jade Brigade Oppie Plaas?

Stellenberg High School travels to Riversdale to face Oakdale Landbou at the intimidating "Die Plaas" on Saturday.

This clash is the marquee fixture of the Western Cape schoolboy rugby weekend, as Stellenberg and Oakdale are ranked in the Top 10 of the Ruggas.co.za rankings.

The "Jade Brigade" has enjoyed a historic 2026 campaign, securing massive victories over traditional powerhouses like Paul Roos (20-10), Paarl Gim (20-19), and Grey College (26-21); however, their performance against Maritzburg College (24-19), Diamantveld (31-20) and Wynberg (38-10) was according to some pundits not as convincing, predicting a loss sooner than later.

While they took time to find their rhythm, Oakdale is hitting peak form. Their recent narrow two-point loss to Paul Roos (13-15) proved they can compete with the country's best. Suddenly, Oakdale are playing to its strengths, using its big forwards to brilliant effect, whereafter they set their dangerous backs to attack with quality ball; however, Oakdale has shown a weakness against big backs running aggressively at the defenders, and I am sure those brilliant coaches at Stellenberg has identified this.

Despite the romantics' wishes for a win for Oakdale, I do not think Stellenberg will travel back to the other side of the “boerewors gordyn” without a smile on their face.

Elsewhere in the beautiful Cape Town, Paarl Gim will cruise to an easy win over Boland Landbou, despite the visitors showing short moments of their previous season’s brilliance.

Paul Roos will also cruise to a win despite Durbanville showing a lot of fight at the ABSA Wildeklawer recently. The gap is just too big.

Outeniqua too will cruise against Daniel Pienaar, and so will Parel Vallei against DF Akademie.

The clash could be between Rondebosch and SACS could be exciting but also very interesting. Both teams came from the Grey High Rugby Festival unbeaten. Rondebosch beat Glenwood (42-22) and KES (29-12), while SACS beat Selborne (34-26) and Kearsney (33-27), which should make SACS the early favourites. This should be the match to attend in Cape Town on Saturday’s mudbath.
