All Blacks head coach Dave Rennie has explained the tactical masterplan behind his massive 44-man squad selection for the upcoming "Rugby's Greatest Rivalry Tour". Fronting the media following the official squad announcement, Rennie broke down his selection philosophy, addressing everything from player fatigue to unearthing raw physical power to counter the back-to-back world champion Springboks.
The most significant talking point was the decision to leave regular captain Ardie Savea out of the opening provincial matches against the United Rugby Championship (URC) franchises. Savea will only join the tour squad in South Africa 10 days before the opening Test at Ellis Park.
Rennie outlined that managing Savea's immense workload was a straightforward tactical decision: “Ardie has been training and playing since January 2025. He had that season there [with Moana Pasifika], then went away with the All Blacks, came to Kobe [in Japan] and then straight into the Nations Championship. So, we need to find a window where we can freshen him up. This seemed like an obvious time, so it was a pretty simple decision.” [1]
Rennie raised eyebrows by selecting a young, incredibly dynamic squad, identifying a distinct need for work-rate and physical enforcement at the breakdown to combat South Africa's "Bomb Squad". This philosophy drove the inclusion of three uncapped rookies:
* Semisi Tupou Ta'eiloa (Moana Pasifika loose forward)
* Siale Lauaki (Hurricanes prop)
* Josh Jacomb (Chiefs lock)
Rennie heavily defended the selection of Tupou Ta'eiloa, highlighting how the young loose forward caught the selectors' eyes despite playing for a struggling franchise. “Look, Ardie speaks really highly of him. It's exciting. It's a really good story in it that someone who maybe is playing in a side that's battling can stand out the way he did. So we're really pleased for him.” [1]
While blooding future talent like 23-year-old dislocated-shoulder survivor Fabian Holland, Rennie tactically bolstered his mid-week squad by recalling weathered heavyweights. The coach highlighted the crucial returns of Ethan Blackadder and 88-Test veteran Rieko Ioane as experience-driven picks specifically designed to steady the ship during relentless midweek matches.
With an incredibly low average age across his prop and lock selections, Rennie's blueprint aims to fuse youthful energy with battle-hardened leadership to survive what he labels "the toughest tour in rugby."
