URC: DHL Stormers Favourite To Secure Third Straight Win Against Dangerous Ulster

31 October 2026

The DHL Stormers are the favourites to secure a tight, high-scoring physical victory over Ulster Rugby at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town today for a high-stakes Round 5 United Rugby Championship (URC) encounter.

The fourth-placed Capetonians seek a third consecutive win after a high-scoring 52-40 win over the Scarlets last weekend. Despite sitting 13th on the log, the visiting Irish province arrives highly motivated after a narrow 34-26 defeat to the Vodacom Bulls in Pretoria.

The fourth-placed DHL Stormers, who come off back-to-back victories, will not be fooled by Ulster’s 13th-placed standing, especially given how their opposition have had to grind out victories against them so far this season, and the fact that the Capetonians found themselves against the ropes in the last 10 minutes against the Scarlets, needing two late tries to seal the win.

With Ulster having scored at least 26 points in their matches, and DHL Stormers well aware that the Vodacom Bulls had to fight their way to victory over the men from Belfast last week, they will not pay much attention to the visitors’ log position going into the clash.

Spicing things up, John Dobson’s men have been more effective on attack and defence, but Ulster will not be intimidated by this as they finally attempt to reap the rewards from their brave performances this season to change their fortunes and move up the table.

Stormers Director of Rugby John Dobson has overhauled his matchday squad, making 10 changes to the starting line-up. Veteran Springbok Cobus Reinach forms a fresh halfback pairing with young playmaker Yaqeen Ahmed, who replaces the rested Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu. Ruhan Nel returns to captain the backline from center, while World Cup-winning hooker Bongi Mbonambi provides vital reinforcement from the bench.

Ulster head coach Richie Murphy counters with eight changes to his starting fifteen to inject physical intensity into the pack. Experienced hooker Rob Herring and centre James Hume return to bolster the core of the team. Flanker David McCann captains the side, while former Stormers eighthman Juarno Augustus starts in the loose trio against his former franchise.

The hosts boast superior attacking and defensive statistics over the opening four rounds of the competition. However, the Stormers remain wary of a late defensive lapse that saw them surrender control in the final ten minutes against the Scarlets. Ulster has scored a minimum of 26 points in their recent outings, proving they possess the attacking structure to punish unforced errors.

The physical battle at the breakdown and set-piece execution will dictate the tempo of the contest. The Stormers rely on their dynamic backline transitions to exploit space, while Ulster looks to dominate the collision fields. Accurate kicking out of hand and disciplined defensive lines will decide this tightly contested North-South derby.

Local analysts expect the Stormers' home-ground advantage and depth to carry them through a tight, high-scoring physical battle.
