URC: Valiant 10bet Lions Comeback Falls Short as Glasgow Strike Late to Secure Bonuspoint Victory

30 October 2026

The Glasgow Warriors extended their unbeaten streak at Scotstoun Stadium by edging out a resilient 10bet Lions outfit 29-20.

A late bonus-point try and a brutal final penalty strike from the hosts broke South African hearts after a thrilling second-half fightback from the Johannesburg franchise. The late accuracy from the tee ultimately robbed the visitors of a well-deserved losing bonus point right at the death.

The hosts launched a blistering early assault, utilising clever grubber kicks to probe the outside channels without initial reward. Glasgow capitalised on a Lions lineout error shortly after, spreading the ball rapidly to Bayley Kuenzle before Quan Horn executed a crucial try-saving tackle. The deadlock snapped in the ninth minute when Fergus Watson finished a spectacular counter-attack from deep within his own half, converted by George Horne.

Chris Smith clawed back three points for the visitors with a well-struck penalty after fourteen minutes of intense physical exchanges. The contest briefly lost shape as both outfits resorted to a frantic kick-and-run approach under immense pressure. Glasgow struck again at the half-hour mark when Dan Lancaster crashed over and converted his own five-pointer to stretch the lead.

The Lions suffered a massive blow when lock Etienne Oosthuizen was sent to the sin-bin with a yellow card in the 34th minute. Capitalising on the numerical advantage, George Horne slipped through a defensive gap to feed Jack Singleton for an easy finish before the halftime whistle. The Scottish outfit marched into the tunnel with a commanding 19-03 advantage at the interval.

The Johannesburg men emerged with renewed vigour, tightening their tight phases and asking serious questions of the local defence. Scrumhalf Morné van den Berg sniped over from close range after fifty minutes to ignite the comeback, with Boeta Chamberlain adding the extras. Momentum swung heavily toward the visitors when loose forward Siba Mahashe crossed for a brilliant individual try against the run of play.

With ten minutes remaining, the Lions completed a sensational turnaround via a powerful five-metre lineout maul that saw Morné Brandon ground the ball. Holding a slender 20-19 lead for the first time in the match, the visitors faced wave after wave of desperate Scottish attacks. The relentless pressure paid dividends five minutes from time when Ollie Smith crossed for the decisive bonus-point try, converted by George Horne to retake the lead.

The final blow landed in the dying moments when Glasgow forced a breakdown penalty deep in South African territory. George Horne stepped up to slot the pressure kick, stretching the margin beyond seven points and robbing the Lions of a consolation log point.
