Dave Rennie faces heavy criticism for allegedly breaching World Rugby communication protocols, a move critics argue highlights a persistent pattern of public compliance issues. Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus publicly called out the All Blacks head coach, claiming that Rennie bypassed official channels to gain a psychological edge ahead of their upcoming test match against the Springboks in Soweto.
The row centres on World Rugby’s newly implemented referee protocols. These rules explicitly restrict coaches from holding private, pre-match meetings with officials to protect referees from external pressure and public lobbying.
This latest incident intensifies scrutiny on Rennie’s history of challenging officiating rules outside of sanctioned channels. This marks the second major time Rennie has found himself in a dispute over World Rugby regulations regarding match officials.
In November 2021, while coaching Australia, Rennie launched a scathing public attack on the refereeing standard following a narrow loss to Wales. Immediately following that test match, he used a live broadcast interview to state, "I thought some of the decision-making by the officials tonight was horrendous and played a big part in the result."
His comments forced World Rugby to hand him a formal written warning. Rennie and Rugby Australia subsequently issued a formal public apology, admitting, "The choice of language and its timing did not meet the standards required from a coach or official in upholding rugby's core values of discipline, integrity and respect."
Five years later, now leading New Zealand, Rennie has skipped the mandated, private technical review process to launch a public press campaign against South Africa's scrum. This has cemented what many see as a repeated reliance on press room grievances rather than official regulatory channels.
Erasmus did not hold back when addressing Rennie’s public comments regarding South Africa's scrumming technique, emphasising that Rennie's actions fit into an old-school strategy of using the media to referee the game.
“My frustration wasn’t so much about his opinion, but when an opinion gets presented as fact,” Erasmus said in Johannesburg after naming his team for the third Test at FNB Stadium on Saturday.
“There are now clear protocols for this. You get five clips to send to World Rugby’s officiating system, and that’s where you raise your concerns.
“If I sat here and said New Zealand are cleaning out illegally at the breakdown and the referees must look into it, that’s not the protocol; that’s talking to referees through the media, and I’ve been burned for that before.
“Once you put a narrative like that out there, everybody starts focusing on it – all the media, all the podcasts, everyone starts analysing it – and a lot of people doing that analysis have no real knowledge of scrums.”
Erasmus further criticised the approach by adding, "We all agreed to the new protocols to protect the integrity of the refs. Coming out in the press and calling our tactics illegal isn't just a whinge, it’s a direct violation of the spirit of those rules. It’s an old-school tactic to put pressure on the whistle-blower, and it’s disappointing."
