Toyota Cheetahs head coach Frans Steyn has pulled no punches ahead of Sunday’s Carling Currie Cup semi-final in Bloemfontein at 15:30 SAST, demanding his players "front up physically" and "man up" if they want to keep their championship dreams alive against a brutal Airlink Pumas side.
The knock-out clash at the Free State Stadium comes just a week after the Cheetahs suffered a bruising 52-26 capitulation to the very same Pumas outfit in Nelspruit, a performance that left Steyn unimpressed.
Speaking ahead of the do-or-die encounter, Steyn revealed that a tense week of video reviews and blunt assessments followed their final league-round collapse.
"I think we disappointed ourselves over the past weekend," Steyn admitted. "There were some harsh words said on Monday and Tuesday. That's not our standard."
Reflecting on the nature of the defeat in Nelspruit, Steyn compared the Pumas’ unrelenting, direct style to the legendary, bruising Blue Bulls packs of old.
"They just ran over us. It was like old Blue Bulls rugby, one big guy comes around the corner, then another, and you have to man up and defend your line."
Despite the heavy defeat, the Cheetahs boss was quick to defend his squad's overall body of work this season, urging his players not to let one bad afternoon define their campaign.
"You can't just look at the Pumas and the Bulls game and say we missed something," Steyn noted. "We have played extraordinary, high-tempo running rugby earlier in the campaign. It's a great opportunity for our squad, especially for our youngsters to learn and stand up."
The quick turnaround and high stakes have also handed Steyn a major headache at the selection table. With several key players returning from injury, the coach warned that reputation alone will not secure a jersey for a match of this magnitude.
"The intensity and pressure of a semi-final mean we cannot take gambles on match fitness just to put big names on paper," Steyn said, emphasising that only those ready for an 80-minute physical war will take the field.
With home-ground advantage locked in for Bloemfontein, the Cheetahs have the perfect platform to exact immediate revenge. However, as Steyn made crystal clear, tactics will mean nothing on Sunday if his side cannot match the Pumas' raw aggression from the very first whistle.
