The historic "Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry" tour kicked off at a buzzing DHL Stadium on Friday, where the DHL Stormers crashed to a 38-21 loss to New Zealand’s formidable All Blacks.
The match started at a blistering pace following the opening kickoff from rookie Stormers flyhalf Yaqeen Ahmed. The visitors immediately established their intent, dominating the physical exchanges and putting the home side's defensive line under immense early pressure.
The Stormers suffered an early blow in the third minute when scrumhalf Imad Khan was forced off with an injury. He was replaced by veteran Dewaldt Duvenhage, stepping up for what marks his final swan song before retiring from professional rugby.
The All Blacks capitalised on their early dominance in the fifth minute. Off the back of a powerful, marching scrum, hooker Samisoni Taukei’aho crashed over the line to open the scoring. Flyhalf Beauden Barrett added the conversion, handing the New Zealanders a swift 07-00 lead.
After absorbing the initial onslaught, the Stormers found their footing and began launching successive waves of attack. The pressure began telling on the visitors, who soon found themselves reduced to 14 men when centre Anton Lienert-Brown was yellow-carded in the 12th minute for a high tackle on Ahmed.
Just three minutes later, things worsened for the All Blacks as flanker Simon Parker received a yellow card for pulling down a player in mid-air, leaving the tourists temporarily down to 13 men.
The Stormers made the numerical advantage count in the 15th minute. Standardising their local brand of forward power, Deon Fourie scored off the back of a powerful rolling lineout maul. Ahmed coolly slotted the conversion to level the score at 07-07.
By the 20-minute mark, a definitive shift in momentum belonged to the Cape side. Both teams continued to compete fiercely for possession, displaying incredibly resolute defensive lines. However, just before the break in the 38th minute, Parker redeemed his earlier transgression by crossing the whitewash in the left-hand corner to restore the All Blacks' advantage, following the conversion by Beauden Barrett to extend their lead to 21-14 at the halftime break,
The second half opened with an immediate tactical shift for the home side, as Stormers captain Ruan Nel was replaced by Wandile Simelane in the 41st minute.
As the match progressed, the fierce competition intensified, but deteriorating discipline from both sides caused the game to see-saw frantically between the two try lines.
The deadlock was broken spectacularly in the 53rd minute. Off the soft hands of veteran loose forward Deon Fourie, speedster Seabelo Senatla sliced through the All Blacks' defence like a knife through butter to score a brilliant try between the posts. Yaqeen Ahmed coolly slotted the conversion to level the score at 14-14.
However, compounding handling errors soon began costing the Stormers critical attacking opportunities. In response, the Stormers deployed their "Bomb Squad" in the 60th minute. The fresh legs immediately re-energised the home team's defence, proving to be a persistent thorn in New Zealand’s side.
The tourists eventually breached the wall in the 67th minute when the powerful Rieko Ioane crossed the whitewash for the All Blacks. Beauden Barrett added the extra two points, pushing the score to 21-14.
The All Blacks struck again just four minutes later. In the 71st minute, substitute playmaker Josh Jacomb sliced through to secure New Zealand's fourth try. Barrett converted successfully once more, widening the gap to 28-14.
Under mounting pressure, the Stormers' structure began to unravel. Another costly handling error deep in their own territory handed the visitors an easy opportunity in the 76th minute, with fullback Josh Moorby dotting down to take the score to 33-14. Jacomb’s conversion attempt drifted wide.
The Cape side fought back tenaciously, forcing a penalty try in the 78th minute after the All Blacks illegally collapsed a rolling opportunity near the line, reducing the deficit to 33-21. Moorby was subsequently shown a yellow card for his infringement.
Despite being down to 14 men, New Zealand delivered the final blow in the 80th minute. Dynamic forward Asafo Aumua powered his way over the line, driving the final nail into the Stormers' coffin to seal a comprehensive 38-21 victory for the All Blacks.
