The Springboks weathered a fierce second-half fightback from Scotland to secure a hard-fought 42-28 victory, overcoming a mid-game dip in momentum to finish strong in an entertaining encounter.
Scotland dominated the opening exchanges, but the Springboks showed trademark patience. They gradually worked their way into the Scottish red zone before Embrose Papier snapped the deadlock. The scrumhalf made a brilliant break to score the opening try, which Handré Pollard converted to make it 07-00 after 17 minutes of play.
The South African momentum grew when a bullocking run by Cobus Wiese put the visitors right back on the front foot. Evan Roos capitalised on the pressure, bulldozing his way over the try line. Pollard added the extras to stretch the lead to a comfortable 14-00.
However, Scotland refused to back down: 4 minutes before halftime, Matt Fagerson powered over for Scotland’s opening try. Finn Russell converted to reduce the deficit to 14-07.
With time up on the clock, a defensive lapse from the Springbok backline allowed Kyle Rowe to cross the whitewash. Russell added the extras to dramatically level the scores at 14-14 heading into the tunnel.
Scotland once again controlled the early stages of the second half, but the Springboks struck back 17 minutes after the restart. Elrigh Louw crashed over for South Africa's third try, with Pollard converting to re-establish a 21-14 lead.
Just two minutes later, Damian Willemse showed great determination, stretching over the line for another score. Pollard’s conversion pushed the lead out to 28-14.
The Springboks looked to have put the game out of reach when young prop Zachery Porthen crashed over from close range. Another successful Pollard conversion pushed the scoreline to an authoritative 35-14.
Rassie Erasmus then introduced the "Bomb Squad," but the sweeping changes disrupted South Africa's rhythm, costing them vital momentum and leading to a string of penalties and defensive errors.
Scotland took full advantage of the disarray with a rapid double-strike: Josh Bayliss struck first, with Russell converting to cut the lead to 35-21 with 13 minutes left on the clock.
Ben White then added his name to the try-scorer's sheet. Russell's successful conversion brought Scotland within a single converted try at 35-28.
With time ticking away and the pressure mounting, Jesse Kriel provided the definitive moment of relief for South Africa. The experienced centre collected a perfectly weighted grubber kick and outsprinted the cover defence on a 40-metre dash to score a much-needed try. Quan Horne stepped up to slot the final conversion, sealing a breathless 42-28 win for the Springboks.
