
The Springboks scored 12 tries in their 80-31 win over the Barbarians FC, in a match that was dominated by the 5 yellow cards issued.
The Springboks attacked from the start of the match, and following great work from the forwards, they spread the ball wide to Edwill van der Merwe, who scored in the corner. Cheslin Kolbe converted to extend the Springboks’ lead to 07-00 after five minutes of play.
The Barbarians replied 4 minutes later when Virimi Vakatawa and Alex Nankivell combined to crash over and past the hapless defence of the Springboks. Virimi Vakatawa took the final pass to crash over the Springboks' tryline. Tomás Albornoz converted the try to level the scores at 07-07.
After 12 minutes of play, Pieter-Steph du Toit was the Springboks’ reply, scoring their second try. Cheslin Kolbe added the extra two points with a conversion to extend the Springboks’ lead to 14-00.
The Springboks launched wave after wave of attacks and Grant Williams made a massive skip-pass to Cheslin Kolbe, who walked over for his first try of the match. Kolbe converted his try to extend the Springboks' lead to 21-00 after 16 minutes of play in the second half.
An overthrow by the Barbarians 15 meters from their tryline was caught by Jasper Wiese, who walked over for the Springboks' 4th try. Kolbe was on target with the conversion to extend their lead to 28-08 after 20 minutes of play in the first half.
Five minutes later, great work by Quan Horn set up Grant Williams to put Riley Norton into space to score his first try in a Springbok jersey. Kolbe converted, extending the Springboks’ lead to 35-07.
The Barbarians scored three tries during the final 10 minutes of play in the first half to cut the Springboks’ lead to 26-35 with two minutes to play.
With time up on the clock, Cheslin Kolbe sniped off the back of a dominant scrum to extend the Springboks’ lead to 40-26 at the halftime break.
After 7 minutes of play in the second half, JJ Kotze scored off the back of a lineout maul. Kolbe converted to extend the Springboks’ lead to 47-26.
Ten minutes later, Edwill van der Merwe scored his hat-trick thanks to fast ball from a ruck that was spread wide, extending the Springboks’ lead to 52-26.
The Barbarians struck back immediately, and following great work by their forwards, the ball was spread wide to Andrew Kellaway to score his second try of the match to cut the Springboks' lead to 52-31.
Thereafter, Faf de Klerk, Jesse Kriel, Andre Esterhuizen and Zachary Porthen added their names to the try scorers list during the final 20 minutes to secure an 80-31 win.
