The Paul Roos Gymnasium (PRG) 1st XV faces Paarl Gimnasium on Saturday, 6 June 2026 at the Jan Kriel Field in Paarl for what is widely considered the "National Championship game of 2026". This highly anticipated clash pits two of South Africa's premier schoolboy rugby powerhouses against each other in a tactical and physical showdown.
Remarkably, home ground advantage has counted for very little in recent history between these two sides. In their last 11 encounters, the away team has won 9 times. Furthermore, Paul Roos won their last two visits to Paarl, meaning they will travel to Jan Kriel with high confidence despite playing away from their Stellenbosch fortress.
Both Paul Roos and Paarl Gim lost only one match each this year, both against Stellenberg. Paarl Gim is on a twelve-match unbeaten streak, while Paul Roos is unbeaten since 18 April 2026, on a seven-match winning streak.
Paarl Gim possesses an abrasive forward pack. Paul Roos must match Paarl Gim's physical intensity in the trenches to stop Paarl Gim from unleashing their clinical running backs. Both teams play rugby at pace; however, Paarl Gim thrives on quick, front-foot ball generated through relentless ruck speed. Although Paul Roos must stop Paarl Gim at the ruck, slowing their ball down, they will also look to secure fast quality ball themselves. This battle on the ground could decide the winner.
Paul Roos halfbacks have excellent tactical boots designed to pin opponents in their half; however, a misplaced kick gives Paarl Gim's lethal, fast-breaking outside backs an invitation to launch counter-strikes.
Expect the first half to be close and an arm wrestle, with Paul Roos looking to establish an early lead; however, Paarl Gim’s dominance up front will give them the edge in the second half, and they will put the defence of Paul Roos under severe pressure with a 15-man attack.
Defence has won several World Cups; however, the Springboks recently used physical dominance as the foundation to dominate world rugby.
The winner should/will claim the crown of the best 1stXV in South Africa for 2026, with Paul Roos’ only “big” game left against Grey College and Paarl Gim’s only “big” game left against Paarl Boishaai.
Who will win? According to a sane and clinical mind, Paarl Gim must be the favourites; however, with a good red wine as a romantic motivator, Paul Roos’ defence will disrupt the well-oiled machine of Gim and defend a small lead during the final ten minutes of the match.
Elsewhere in the Western and Southern Cape, I do not foresee any surprises with easy wins for Paarl Boishaai and Stellenberg.
