The Mzansi Rugby League (MRL), an unsanctioned breakaway competition in South Africa, officially scrapped its nationwide trials. Despite the setback, the 16-team league still aims to launch in 2027, offering monthly salaries between R15,000 and R30,000.
The decision follows intense pressure and threats from the South African Rugby Union (SARU), which warned that any registered player participating in the trials would face immediate and permanent expulsion from all official South African rugby structures.
SARU issued a firm statement declaring the trials "unauthorised" and warned that participation would undermine the "integrity and stability" of domestic and international rugby.
MRL co-founder Calvin Smith stated the trials were cancelled to ensure players were not "placed in positions of uncertainty" regarding their professional futures if they were not selected for the league.
“After engaging with players across South Africa, one concern consistently came up: If I attend MRL trials and I’m not selected, will I still be able to play rugby in South Africa?’
“As a result, the MRL has made the decision not to proceed with open nationwide trials for season one.”
“This decision was made to ensure players are not placed in positions of uncertainty while pursuing professional opportunities.”
Smith also confirmed that all players who paid the R899 trial fee for the Durban session (originally set for 5 July 2026) have been refunded.
“The league will now begin engaging players and their representatives directly regarding opportunities within the MRL.”
The MRL is currently in a legal battle with SARU, accusing the governing body of discrediting the project and making false safety claims.
“There is an ongoing legal process relating to these matters, and the league will not comment further at this time.”
