Flyhalf Jurie Matthee has signed a contract extension that sees him join a growing group of players in committing to Stormers Rugby’s Project 2029.
The 25-year-old homegrown talent has made huge strides since first pulling on a DHL Stormers jersey in late 2024 and is set to add significantly to his 21 caps over the next three seasons.
A level-headed and versatile playmaker who is equally comfortable taking the ball to the line and dictating the game with his boot, Matthee has shown an ability to step up when the team needs him in high-pressure situations.
A product of Paarl Gimnasium, Matthee impressed for Maties in the Varsity Cup before joining the professional ranks where his career took off.
A Vodacom URC Man of the Match performance in the win against Benetton in Treviso earlier this season underlined Matthee’s value and with a long-term contract signed, he is poised to continue that upward trajectory.
Director of Rugby John Dobson said that Matthee’s development within the Stormers Rugby environment has been extremely encouraging.
“Jurie has proven himself to be extremely coachable and applies himself in a way that gives those around him confidence.
“He has already shown that he is much more than just a steady hand; he is respected by teammates and opposition alike. You underestimate Jurie’s abilities at your peril.
“We are delighted to keep him here long-term and are really looking forward to seeing him develop further within our system,” he said.
Matthee said that there is no place he would rather play his rugby.
“I grew up dreaming about pulling on this jersey and playing for this team. Since coming into the environment, I have grown as a player and look forward to seeing where this journey takes me.
“I feel blessed to represent this club and our fans. The vision that we have here for the future is incredibly exciting, and I am so glad I get to be a part of it,” he said.
