John Dobson views Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu's captaincy as the next logical step in a long-term plan for the Stormers and believes he was "always earmarked as a future Stormers captain".
Feinberg-Mngomezulu was appointed captain for the first time for a vital match against the Leicester Tigers due to regular captain Salmaan Moerat's unavailability and injuries to other senior players, but Dobson stressed it was about more than just filling a temporary gap.
Dobson emphasised that since Feinberg-Mngomezulu has committed to the club long-term (until at least July 2029), they must invest in his leadership development. This is part of the "Project 2029" strategy to retain core talent in Cape Town.
“He was always earmarked as a future Stormers captain. He’s got both components, the technical game management, and he’s bought into this project. We’ve got him here long term, so we must invest in his leadership.”
Feinberg-Mngomezulu's appointment is seen as a significant vote of confidence and a deliberate move to secure the franchise's future leadership.
Dobson has previously described Feinberg-Mngomezulu as a "generational talent" with "incredible maturity, competitiveness, [and] game awareness".
While highly praising his potential (even suggesting he could be the "greatest Springbok of all time"), Dobson has also previously highlighted the "real tightrope" in managing the young player's physical well-being due to a history of knee injuries, stressing the need for patience to avoid burnout.
Feinberg-Mngomezulu admitted it still feels surreal.
“Super privileged. It should be any young player from this region’s dream to captain the side one day. I got the call from Dobbo this morning, and it was a really nice phone call to have at the end of the week before the game.”
“I’ve got so many great leaders around me. I want to set the example and bring my A-game onto the field.”
