Griquas coach Pieter Bergh has clarified the union's stance on winger Dylan Maart, stating they are open to extending his loan to the Stormers for the entire Vodacom URC campaign, provided he is available for their Currie Cup matches.
Maart is currently with the Stormers on a loan agreement that expires at the end of December 2025. His final match under the current agreement is set to be against the Bulls on January 3, 2026.
The 29-year-old winger has made an immediate impact at the Stormers, scoring tries against Munster, La Rochelle, and the Lions.
Bergh said Griquas is willing to negotiate an extended loan but needs certainty on the qualification process for the Currie Cup Premier Division via the SA Cup. He emphasised the risk of not having Maart for their own competitive needs and the moral consideration of not blocking a player's career progression.
However, Bergh confirmed that no formal request for a permanent transfer has been received from the Stormers yet, and the final decision hinges on the 2026 SA Cup and Currie Cup tournament structures.
“Our relationship with the Stormers makes it possible for us to be open to negotiations to loan Dylan to them for the entire URC campaign. However, we’re not going to make a final decision until we know what the tournament structures entail.”
“We are not opposed to loaning Dylan to the Stormers for the whole URC, provided he is available for us in the Currie Cup.”
Stormers Director of Rugby John Dobson has publicly expressed interest in making the move permanent, saying they are in discussions with Griquas. However, Bergh states that nothing official has been tabled yet.
