DHL Western Province laid down a serious marker on the third day of the SA Rugby U20 Women's Week in Mthatha on Wednesday, scoring 42 unanswered points against a good South Western Districts side, showing they are the team to beat at this year’s tournament.
WP remained undefeated after two encounters, while in other matches, Border and the Blue Bulls secured good wins over the Limpopo Blue Bulls and Griquas respectively.
The Capetonians team were too strong for SWD, who still had some say in the first half of the match. WP scored three tries for a 17-0 lead at the break, but in the second half added 25 unanswered points for a 42-0 win.
WP fullback Asisipho Ntente scored five tries for her team with a brace by centre Shaundre Francke. Left wing Raeeqah Hendricks also dotted down. Flyhalf Senica Adams battled off the tee and could only convert one of the eight tries.
The Blue Bulls had way too much firepower for Griquas and the 50-0 scoreline (half-time 33-0) was an accurate reflection of the dominance the Gauteng side had over their Northern Cape rivals.
Blue Bulls hooker Karabo Lebotsa scored a brace from lineout drives, while lively scrumhalf Thokozile Senekal also dotted down twice. Manini Kgladi (flanker), Shiniqwa Lamprecht (centre), Nontokozo Nkosi (wing) and Lethabo Nkuna (replacement flanker) also dotted down, with Lamprecht kicking five conversions.
Border also proved too slick and powerful for the Limpopo Blue Bulls, winning by 37-0 after the hosts led by 15-0 at the break.
Sinathi Mzamo, hooker of Border, got a brace with Thoko Sikela (flanker), Lilitha Vakalisa (centre) and both replacement front rankers, Asemhale Zazela and Nadi Rolinyathi, also scoring tries. Cloe Adams kicked two conversions.
The first match on Wednesday is between Free State and Eastern Province (09h30), followed by a clash between the Golden Lions and the Sharks (11h30), and the day will conclude when Border 2 take on Zimbabwe at 13h30. The tournament ends on Thursday, when all teams will be in action.
