Who Will Miss Them The Most?

 

Bloemfontein – This weekend one of school rugby’s most anticipated annual clashes takes place when Grey College and Paul Roos Gymnasium resume old rivalries for the 33rd time. Another important thing is it’s the last game for their school, for a lot of  the players, so it means a lot to them.

Grey College is currently ranked 2nd had a somewhat "strange" season. Missing out on the "Famous" Easter Weekend Tournaments playing at the Union Festival gave them a somewhat under the radar start to the season. But their record speaks for itself, played 13 and won 12. Their only loss was against Paarl Boishaai (28-18), the current no1 ranked 1stXV team in the country.

Grey College will be missing Jaco van Tonder (5) Dian Schoonees (8) Rewan Kruger (9) Rikus Pretorius (12) and Jaco van Heyningen (13), who is all doing duty at the u19 International Series in Cape Town for the SA School Sides. Losing these players will leave Grey with a strong pack of forwards but their potent back line would have lost most of its sting.

Paul Roos, currently ranked no 9 have lost 5 of its 17 games this season.  But 4 of these games was lost against current top 10 schools. Their loss last weekend was against a difficult Boland Landbou, indicating their strength without their SA Schools Players, Damian Willemse (10), Jessie Johnson (6) and BJ Dixon (5). However it also indicated their way forward. Joshua Vermeulen (SA Schools player) full back assisted by centres Lyle Hendriks and Aden Topley were instrumental in their massive fight back resulting in a final score of 32 - 22 after trailing 27 - 0 at half time. 

So can we then expect a Grey side that will try to slow the game down and play a forwards dominated game? Expect Paul Roos to use the advantage of a dry hard pitch and try to run Grey off their feet. Paul Roos will hope to repeat their victory from last year beating Grey College 19 - 12 at home.
