George Whitehead marked his milestone 150th appearance for the Suzuki Griquas in spectacular fashion, contributing 13 points with the boot to guide his side to a hard-fought 23-16 victory over the Airlink Pumas.
The triumph secures the Griquas a back-to-back and fifth Currie Cup crown, exorcising the ghosts of 2022 when the Pumas famously stunned them on the exact same ground to claim their maiden title.
The match started in ideal fashion for the hosts. Griquas' early dominance was rewarded in the 9th minute when Whitehead slotted an easy penalty to open the scoring at 03-00.
However, the Pumas hit back against the run of play five minutes later. Jaycee Nel intercepted a looping skip pass and quickly offloaded to Darren Adonis, who raced away to score the opening try of the afternoon. Clinton Swart added the extras, putting the visitors ahead 07-03.
Griquas responded with composure. Following a patient build-up that saw wave after wave of attack, Mnombo Zwelendaba found a gap and sliced the Pumas' defense wide open to score a brilliant try. Whitehead made no mistake with the conversion, snatching the lead back at 10-07.
The see-saw battle continued as the Pumas direct approach paid dividends. Utilizing their heavy forward pack straight from the kickoff, they forced a penalty which Swart converted in the 25th minute to level the scores at 10-10. Swart struck again in the 33rd minute with another successful penalty, edging the Pumas ahead 13-10.
The final moments of the first half were defined by agonizing near-misses for both sides. Griquas' Sako Makata knocked the ball on as he was crossing the tryline, and just a minute later, the Pumas' JJ Scheepers suffered the exact same fate at the opposite end. The Pumas held onto their narrow 13-10 advantage as the teams headed into the tunnel.
The second half developed into a brutal arm wrestle, characterized by heavy collisions and mounting unforced errors as fatigue set in. It took 17 minutes of scoreless grit before Whitehead stepped up in the 57th minute to slot his second penalty, drawing the teams level at 13-13.
With ten minutes remaining, the Griquas pack delivered a massive statement. A dominant scrum earned the hosts a penalty, and Whitehead showed nerves of steel to launch a spectacular 60-metre monster kick through the uprights, putting Griquas ahead 16-13.
The Pumas refused to go away quietly. Just two minutes later, Swart showed equal composure to slot a penalty of his own, knotting the scoreline at 16-16 to set up a grandstand finish.
The decisive blow came in the 75th minute. Griquas set up a powerful driving maul from the 22-metre line, splintering the Pumas' defense. Janco Uys crashed over at the back of the superb forward effort to score the match-winning try. Whitehead capped off his historic day by converting the difficult extra points, sealing the emotional 23-16 victory.
