The Hollywoodbets Sharks XV secured a hard-fought 19-12 Currie Cup victory over the Sanlam Boland Cavaliers at Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu on Saturday, 08/08/2026.
Following the Round 4 match, head coach Mike Vowles praised his youthful squad's mental and physical development after they successfully withstood intense pressure during the second half. Vowles highlighted the team's defensive grit and improved decision-making as massive signs of progression.
“It’s another one where we were tested character-wise and to hold on as we did in that second half, I’m very proud of the group,” said Vowles.
“We created a lot of opportunities, and you can see the growth in the team, and they’re starting to show more confidence in the way we play and the decision-making. So it’s another really positive step in the right direction.”
For Vowles, the foundation of the victory was laid by the Sharks’ defensive effort, which successfully kept the Durban-based side's Currie Cup campaign alive.
“If you look at how we defended, there was real physicality, effort and attitude, and I think that was probably the defining part of the second half,” he said.
“We defended well, and we put them under pressure, which led to skill errors and kept us in the game.”
