Hollywoodbets Sharks head coach Mike Vowles hailed his side’s deep connection and fighting spirit after securing a breathless 26-24 bonus-point victory over the Airlink Pumas in their 2026 Carling Currie Cup opener.
Despite a fierce late onslaught from the hosts, the Sharks held firm in Mbombela to claim a crucial away win, ignited by a debut hat-trick from club rugby graduate Lyle Matthews.
The Sharks endured a gruelling opening exchange as the Pumas applied heavy early pressure. Reflecting on the tactical battle, Vowles noted both the slow start and the composure that turned the tide.
“We didn’t start particularly well. We were under pressure for the first 20 minutes, but we weathered that storm quite well and got a foothold in the game.”
“Our kicking game set us up for a couple of really good opportunities that we were able to convert to build the lead."
"We knew the Pumas would come out firing. I don't think we necessarily managed the game that well in the first 20 minutes of the second half, but we stayed in it. There was incredible effort by the team to stick to the system and keep calm under real pressure.”
The standout storyline of the afternoon belonged to winger Lyle Matthews. Plucked straight from club rugby, the debutant claimed the Carling Champion Man of the Match award with a stunning three-try haul.
Vowles was full of praise for the newcomer's transition to the big stage.
“Lyle joined us from Hillcrest Villagers where he was playing club rugby. His performances there earned him a call-up, and I’m just so happy that he took his opportunity. He’s a special talent and the most unbelievable human being. His success is fantastic.”
For Vowles, the victory transcended tactical shapes and physical metrics. The head coach pointed to the squad's culture as the deciding factor when the match went down to the wire.
“This performance was more than just about rugby," Vowles explained. "It was about a team that was connected and really cared deeply for each other, which is a fantastic indictment on our leadership group. One of the key things about our team is showing each other how much we care—for one another, for the badge, and for the union.”
While celebrating a notoriously difficult victory in Mbombela, the Sharks coaching staff are already looking toward execution improvements ahead of Round 2.
“We understand the magnitude of this result; winning away from home in Mbombela is special," Vowles acknowledged. "But we are under no illusions. There is still work to do, and there are some fixes we need to put in place this week to ensure we deliver a good performance against the Toyota Cheetahs next Friday.”
