Vodacom Bulls Are Focused on Performance, Not Permutations, Ahead of Pau Clash

In a press conference on Thursday, Vodacom Bulls coach Johan Ackermann emphasised that the team's focus is on performance and accountability rather than qualification scenarios for their upcoming match against Pau.

Ackermann stated the team hasn't discussed permutations for progressing to the Investec Champions Cup last 16, but rather the need to "start playing 80 minutes" and adhere to their standards and values.

“We haven’t really spoken about scenarios or permutations, if we do this, then that can happen. The general talk is that we need to start playing 80 minutes and live up to our standards, our values, and our accountability to the jersey, our supporters, and our sponsors.”

He admitted the team is "not blind to the pressure" from their seven-game losing streak, but focusing on the potential outcome only adds more pressure and takes away focus from the things they can control.

“We’re not blind to the pressure; it’s there. But if you focus on, ‘If we win this, then that can happen,’ you take away the things you can control, and you just add more pressure. We want to take this game minute by minute, from the kick-off.”

The coach confirmed significant team rotation, with seven changes in the forwards and four in the backline, in a bid to reverse their fortunes.

Ackermann highlighted the strength of their opponents, noting that Pau is second in the French league and playing very good rugby this season.

“We’re playing a quality side lying second in the Top 14. It’s a massive challenge, but we believe we’re on the right track.”

He mentioned the team needs to cover all areas and remain alert for the full 80 minutes, ensuring they convert opportunities into points to break the losing run.

“I can’t fault the players for their energy or their willingness to work. Even this week [in Pau], the field was muddy and slippery, but the boys worked hard. We’re not far off; sometimes things just need to go your way.

“We’re scoring enough points, but we’re conceding more than we score, and then obviously the result won’t go your way. If we can get that sorted and stay on top of our attack, hopefully that moment we’re waiting for is around the corner.”

“When you’re away, you get more time together off the field, breakfasts, dinners, sitting and talking. There’s no one rushing home. Hopefully that connection spills over onto the field.”
