The Hollywoodbets Sharks secured a historic United Rugby Championship (URC) victory on the road, shutting out Munster with an impenetrable defensive display. Head coach JP Pietersen praised his squad's relentless work rate and tactical discipline after anchoring a memorable away win. The result marks a major milestone for the Durban-based franchise in European conditions.
The Sharks put on a defensive masterclass to deny the hosts a single crossing over the whitewash. The team’s frontline stood firm under immense pressure, consistently driving back Munster's ball-carriers. Pietersen highlighted the immense defensive shift as a testament to the squad’s ongoing progression.
“A special win for us tonight. First time winning here as the Sharks organisation in the URC,” Pietersen said. “With our defensive effort, we didn’t give them one try. It shows what the boys have been building.”
The victory concludes a highly productive touring block for the coaching staff and the travelling squad. The experience has primed the franchise for their upcoming fixtures back on home soil.
“I’m extremely happy. I learned so much from the players … It was a great experience, not only on the field, but also off the field too.”
A powerful blend of youth and experience laid the foundation for the clinical performance. The coaching staff singled out core leaders who stepped up to dictate the pace and secure the breakdown.
“We fight for each other. It’s a good mix of just guys getting along, old, young, in between … One of our goals is to connect not just with mates, but also make a new connection in the team.”
Pietersen credited the core leadership group of Nick Hatton, Emile van Heerden, Vincent Tshituka, and Ethan Hooker for guiding the team home. He also gave a special nod to veteran Springbok prop Vincent Koch for his immense off-field influence.
“Massive credit to Vincent; he didn’t play one minute on tour but was always a positive guy in the meetings, leads well at training, speaks well. Holds guys accountable as he’s the club captain, which I love about him.”
With several Sharks players selected by Rassie Erasmus for national duty, the focus temporarily shifts to the international stage. Pietersen expressed complete confidence in his Springbok contingent as they prepare for a gruelling Test schedule.
“I know it’s going to be a tough four weeks, but they’re busy with something really incredible as a group. I know they’re going to be successful,” he added.
