Hollywoodbets Sharks head coach JP Pietersen has overhauled his matchday squad for Friday’s United Rugby Championship clash against Cardiff Rugby at Arms Park at 20:45 SAST.
After beating Lyon in the EPCR Challenge Cup, the Durban-based franchise has recalled significant Springbok firepower to the starting line-up. Regular captain André Esterhuizen returns to marshal the midfield, while explosive flyers Ethan Hooker and Edwill van der Merwe occupy the wings.
The most critical change comes at flyhalf due to a sudden injury crisis in the playmaker slot. Injuries to both Vusi Moyo and Jordan Hendrikse have forced Pietersen to hand the number 10 jersey to Gianni Lombard. Lombard becomes the third flyhalf to start for the franchise in as many weeks.
Pietersen believes the tactical disruption presents a massive opportunity for the versatile back to anchor the backline.
“It’s a big change at 10, but hopefully we can get settled at flyhalf,” Pietersen stated during the team announcement. “We had Vusi starting at 10 against the Stormers and Jordan starting against Lyon at 10, and now we have Gianni. Vusi got injured in that Stormers game, and Jordan got injured against Lyon, so it does give Gianni an opportunity.”
Pietersen expressed confidence in Lombard’s ability to control the tempo against the Welsh region. Despite the lack of game time in the pivot position this season, Lombard's preparation has impressed the management group.
“He’s been training well, he’s applied himself, he’s leading well, speaking well in the group, and he’s got heaps of experience, and he’s a gifted player,” Pietersen added. “His fundamentals are good, and hopefully the team can help him.”
