Hollywoodbets Sharks club captain Vincent Koch is laying down a brutal marker at Hollywoodbets King’s Park. The Springbok tighthead is driving an uncompromising international standard well away from the matchday cameras. This gruelling pre-season handed the Sharks a rare luxury: true squad continuity.
"We want that international standard in training," Koch says.
The double World Cup winner refuses to accept anything less than elite preparation. He expects his teammates to pack down with intensity and hold each other accountable through every phase. For Koch, a winning culture is forged in the dark, long before the stadium lights switch on.
"Off the field, we want to drive the culture of the Sharks," he admits. "I think it’s something that we’ve lacked over the last few years."
Leadership at the union now demands open, honest communication. Club captains are acting as the vital link to clear the clutter between the squad and the coaching staff. This direct channel allows players to challenge ideas, clear the air, and build genuine trust with management.
Koch’s own test-match journey forces a hard-nosed perspective on squad environment. After losing his place in the Springbok setup, the heavy-hitting prop hit a patch of rough form. A blunt tactical chat with assistant coach JP Pietersen completely reset his alignment.
"Coach JP actually just changed my mentality towards approaching rugby and being at the Sharks," Koch says. "He’s refreshed my mind. He gave me some energy again."
That renewed hunger is filtering directly through the Durban franchise. Younger loose forwards like Phepsi Buthelezi are already absorbing these non-negotiable test-match lessons. Koch is anchoring the scrum and mentoring the next generation to ensure the Sharks consistently deliver under pressure.
