Vodacom Bulls boss Johan Ackermann has demanded an immediate mental reset from his squad ahead of their upcoming clash against Munster, despite their clinical 47-13 opening-round victory over Zebre Parma.
The head coach is already looking ahead to a massive step up in intensity for this weekend's clash against Munster in Limerick. Ackermann expects a far stiffer physical test in Ireland and has warned his players to prepare for a hostile environment.
To cope with this incoming physical onslaught, Ackermann has reinforced his front-row stocks following a serious ankle injury to Mornay Smith. The Bulls have summoned 21-year-old prop Jean Erasmus to fly out and anchor the scrum alongside Khutha Mchunu as emergency backup in Ireland.
The tactical blueprint will need a major overhaul as the team moves from the dry, fast conditions of Italy into the European autumn. Ackermann expects weather conditions to deteriorate significantly, forcing the Pretoria franchise to adapt their expansive style. Staying discipline-focused in wet weather will be a top priority for the touring squad.
“Limerick is a tough place to play,” Ackermann said, highlighting the environmental challenge. “The conditions are going to change quite drastically. We’ve had beautiful weather in Italy, and tonight it was around 24 or 25 degrees when we kicked off. Next week it will probably be rain and a temperature drop.”
The Bulls mentor also expects a fierce backlash from an inherently dangerous Munster outfit. Following an opening-round 26-20 defeat against the Glasgow Warriors, the Irish heavyweights will be desperate to protect their home fortress and kickstart their season. Ackermann knows his side will face an incredibly motivated pack hungry to assert dominance up front.
“Then you’ve got the hostile crowd,” Ackermann noted, anticipating the vocal opposition. “I heard they lost, so they’re going to be really fired up. It’s a team that’s constantly in the playoffs and constantly near the top of this competition.”
Managing the quick turnaround and heavy travel load is the immediate hurdle for the coaching staff. Ackermann expects his players to clear the hurdle professionally and focus entirely on the physical battle awaiting them at Thomond Park.
“They’re going to bring a totally different challenge from tonight,” Ackermann concluded. “So we have to reset, recover from a long day of travel and get the boys ready to play.”
