The 10bet Lions launched their United Rugby Championship campaign with a thrilling, edge-of-the-seat 27-26 victory against defending champions Leinster Rugby at 10bet Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg.
In a breathless encounter that wasn't decided until deep into extra time, Ivan van Rooyen's men exacted partial revenge for last season's play-off defeat, surviving an audacious tactical gamble that almost came back to haunt them.
Despite leading comfortably in the final stretch, the Lions repeatedly turned down three separate kickable penalty opportunities in search of an elusive bonus-point try. Their ambition nearly cost them dearly as a late Leinster fightback turned the final minutes into a nerve-shattering defensive stand.
The contest burst into life immediately from the kickoff. Leinster established early territorial dominance, camping inside the Lions' red zone. After a prolonged phase of sustained pressure, scrumhalf Fintan Gunne spotted a gap at the base of an active ruck, sniping over to score the season's opening try and establishing a 5-0 lead.
The hosts hit back almost instantly. Erich Cronje timed his run perfectly to catch a brilliant inside pass from Nico Steyn, slicing through the defensive line to score. Chris Smith added the extra two points, putting the Lions ahead 7-5. Smith extended the lead to 10-5 shortly after by slotting a well-struck penalty.
Leinster’s response was lethal. Seamless handling across the backline unlocked space out wide, allowing Fintan Gunne to run through for his second try of the day. Caspar Gabriel added the conversion to shift the scoreline back to 12-10 in favour of the visitors.
The high-tempo rugby continued as Henco van Wyk produced a magical piece of skill, throwing a spectacular offload to unleash Erich Cronje, who crossed in the corner for his second try. Smith’s successful conversion made it 17-12. However, right before the halftime whistle, Leinster’s Vincent Gunne found a way through the defensive line to score. Gabriel’s conversion ensured the Irish province headed into the break with a slim 19-17 lead.
The furious pace did not slacken in the second half, with both sides throwing caution to the wind and launching counter-attacks from deep inside their own territories. The crucial deadlock-breaker arrived in the 61st minute when Leinster yielded a penalty under immense pressure. Smith stepped up and calmly slotted the kick, edging the Lions back into a 20-19 lead.
As the physical toll mounted, Leinster's discipline began to crack. Replacement forward Dylan McNeice was shown a yellow card for repeated defensive infractions, leaving the visitors a man down for a crucial stretch of the match.
The Lions capitalised perfectly. Testing Leinster's rearranged backfield, Smith executed a pinpoint cross-field kick pass into the path of Kelly Mpeku, who gathered cleanly to finish in the corner. Smith added the challenging sideline conversion to extend the lead to 27-19.
What should have been a comfortable closing sequence instead spiralled into chaos. The Lions’ aggressive decision to turn down three separate kickable penalties left the door open for Leinster. The home side's problems compounded when SJ Kotze was shown a yellow card, reducing them to 14 men for the final play.
Deep into injury time, Leinster’s Charlie Tector broke through a tiring defensive line to crash over the line, securing a vital second bonus point for the reigning champions. Gabriel quickly added the conversion, but the final whistle blew immediately after, cementing a famous 27-26 victory for a jubilant Lions outfit
