The Golden Lions U20 team delivered a resounding statement of intent in the SA Rugby U20 Championship, dismantling a shell-shocked Free State Cheetahs U20 side 69–07 in Johannesburg. From the opening whistle, the young Lions dominated every facet of play, combining brutal physical dominance at the breakdown with a clinical, high-tempo expansive game that the visitors simply could not contain.
The onslaught began in the eighth minute when flyhalf Matthew Abbey sliced through the Cheetahs' defensive line for a brilliant solo try, which he promptly converted. Just four minutes later, James Schnetler crashed over from close range following relentless phase play, putting the hosts 14–0 ahead. Although the Cheetahs briefly responded through a Sibusiso Mahlangu try converted by Heinz Stockenstrom, it proved to be a minor speed bump for a rampant Lions outfit.
Before the half-time whistle could rescue the visitors, the Lions put the game out of reach. Hooker Thapelo Mphela scored his first try of the afternoon, and Alzeadon Felix quickly followed suit by leaving the Free State cover defence scrambling. Abbey maintained a flawless record from the tee, sending the teams into the second half with the Lions holding a commanding 28–07 lead.
Any hopes of a Free State fightback were instantly crushed at the start of the second half. Directly from the restart, Schnetler caught the Cheetahs' defence sleeping to secure his brace. Mphela then took centre stage to cross the whitewash twice more, completing a spectacular hat-trick and extending the scoreline to 52–07 before being substituted to a standing ovation.
Even after emptying their bench with five simultaneous tactical changes in the 71st minute, the Lions refused to take their foot off the gas. Replacement McMillen Mongwana made an immediate impact by scoring twice, while Sam Bruwer also profited from the tired, drifting Cheetahs defence to add his name to the scoresheet. The 11-try masterclass concluded deep into extra time, sealing a historic 69–07 victory.
This maximum five-point haul carries massive implications for the tournament standings. Following this weekend's second-round clashes, the Junior Lions officially top the log with a perfect 10 points. While their cross-Jukskei rivals, the Vodacom Bulls U20, also remain unbeaten on 10 points, the Lions' weekend blowout hands them a crucial 12-point superior points difference, earning them early bragging rights at the summit of the table.
